Who We Are:

Wonderful College Prep Academy is a charter network in California's Central Valley committed to providing a world-class education for all students. The Academy's mission is to graduate students prepared to earn a college degree and to put them on a promising career path for life. We believe this begins with a nurturing, engaging, community-centered school environment where students develop a strong and well-rounded academic foundation. Ultimately, this will prepare generations of leaders in the Central Valley who are critical thinkers and life-long learners.

The Academy's first school opened in Delano in 2009, serving students from across the Central Valley in grades 6-12. In 2016, we moved to our new, state-of-the-art college prep campus in Delano, and in the fall of 2017, added an elementary school in Delano and opened a second charter school in Lost Hills. In Delano, we serve over 2,000 students in grades TK-12, while in Lost Hills, we serve over 400 students in grades TK-10 and will grow to serve students through 12th grade over the next two years.

All students have access to technology, from hands-on-STEM learning for younger students in a fully equipped "maker's space" to one-to-one school-provided devices for all students. The Academy aims to provide every opportunity for our students that often is not found in public or charter schools, including the ability to graduate from high school with a free Associate Degree. Through a unique partnership with Bakersfield College, our students enroll in college classes starting in 9th grade and complete all their A-G requirements, in addition to their AS Degree requirements over the course of four years. In addition, all graduates are eligible to earn a four-year renewable college scholarship through the generous support of Lynda and Stewart Resnick.

A day in the life at Wonderful:

Wonderful College Prep Academy is accepting applications for a Success Coach for the GEAR UP grant. The Success Coach will initially work with 6th and 7th grade students at Wonderful College Prep Academy in Delano and Lost Hills and will eventually follow the student cohorts into the high schools and through their first year of college. Workdays will be in alignment with Wonderful College Prep Academy District's calendar, with occasional hours on Saturday.

Provides mentoring, outreach and support services to students in our current GEAR UP cohort (current 6th and 7th graders) to include the following: implementing activities to improve the number of students who have knowledge and experience of different colleges and careers available, encourage high academic achievement in order to obtain goals of attending college and pursuing a career of interest.

This position will report to the GEAR UP Coordinator – Delano/Lost Hills. The Success Coach responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

• Assess student’s needs, set academic goals and formulate a comprehensive plan for assistance in collaboration with the student, parent, teachers, counselors, other agencies and community partners
• Help support students in the classroom by providing a curriculum that includes goal setting, academic monitoring, career and college research and readiness
• Communicate regularly with parent and/or guardian of students on roster to discuss academic progress, obstacles and needed efforts by students and parents; should include face to face contact, phone, e-mail and other as needed communication opportunities
• Help increase family knowledge of career and college opportunities
• Participate in all meetings and events related to GEAR UP
• Other duties as assigned

ABOUT THE GEAR UP GRANT: GEAR UP is a federally funded Title III Grant. Wonderful College Prep Academy, in partnership with Avenal and Sanger Unified School Districts, will work with 6th and 7th grade students from four middle schools to prepare them for college. The Federal Department of Education website for GEAR UP is http://www2.ed.gov/programs/gearup/index.html.

This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides seven-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school and their first year of college.

Qualifications

• BA/BS Degree.
• Two years’ experience with education support services
• A commitment and passion for educational equity and justice and the desire to work tirelessly on behalf of students from California's Central Valley.
• An eager, flexible learner and problem solver who feels comfortable taking initiative.
• A self-starter with exceptional work ethic and the ability to work well away from colleagues and management.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• An ability to quickly establish rapport and communicate well with scholars.
• A valid California driver's license required.
• Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
• COVID vaccination will be required for this position unless candidate has a legally valid exemption.
