SUMMARY OF POSITION

The role of the Wonderful Leadership Program is to create future leaders of Wonderful Pistachios & Almonds. Through the 4 six-month rotational assignments in the program, the Leader Trainee will create and implement projects and improve company results while working in various departments. While in each rotation, the Wonderful Leader Trainee will cover a broad range of tasks per the department needs. The specialty areas within the Leadership Trainee Program are: Operations, Engineering, Safety, Quality Systems, and Administration, with primary focus on learning the operations and production side of the business.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Gain leadership skills to become Zone Leaders and learn how to manage a crew of production workers.

· Build expertise in lean manufacturing, problem solving and continuous improvement.

· Build operational skills by learning in different departments of the organization such as Operations, Quality, Food Safety, Engineering, Human Resources, Grower Relations and more.

· Actively promotes safety and safe working requirements in all areas of responsibility.

· Provides day-to-day direction of employees and ensures compliance with company policies and work rules; ensures GMPs and safety requirements are met.

· Participate in and lead problem solving activities with production teams, management, & fellow colleagues.

· Cultivates continuous improvement activities, manages 5S, and applies lean thinking into the day-to-day operations within all areas of responsibility.

· Works in a team setting with a team work mentality to meet all company set projects and deadlines.

 

Operations

· Provides daily production plan and priorities to areas within assigned zone. Raises and resolves any customer demand scheduling conflicts.

· Manages standard work, within responsible zones to achieve production output and quality targets. Requests and directs resources necessary to accomplish group goals and objectives.

· Works with supporting departments to address safety, quality or productivity issues in a timely manner.

· Ensures production work is properly staged and ready, in order to eliminate zone area down-time.

· Builds capability to perform all activities within assigned zone, including running equipment.

· Maintains and enforces company rules and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.

· Supports performance management process and is aligned with organization’s overall goals.

· Attends and leads Floor Management Development System (FMDS) meetings in assigned zone.

· Actively engaged in the organization’s Wonderful Way goals to complete all assigned activities.

· Plays an instrumental part in the development of strong leaders within the team.

· Evaluates performance and morale of team members, ensures that training and development of team members is on-going, and recommends promotions, transfers, terminations and wage adjustments.

· Will be responsible for giving feedback to employees, and administers discipline within approved guidelines, including suspensions if deemed necessary.

· Participates in, leads and coaches WOW (War On Waste) teams, at least on a quarterly basis. 

· Shadows Zone Leaders and Area Leaders to gain the ability to provide back-up coverage for Zone Leaders on weekends/2nd shift and scheduled/unscheduled time off.

· Communicates with Area Leaders on performance of department, provides updates regarding projects and implementation of changes.

· Assists in special projects and any other duties as assigned.

 

 Engineering

· Designs and implements cost-effective equipment modifications to help improve safety and reliability.

· Works with others in engineering, fabrication/machining, plant management, line operations, vendors, contractors, etc. to develop best solutions. 

· Prepares layouts, drawings, or sketches of machinery or equipment, such as a shop tooling, scale layouts, or new equipment design, using drafting equipment or computer-aided design (CAD) software.

· Develops, sources, and/or justifies equipment and processes to improve capability and/or capacity.

· Discusses and solves complex problems in partnership with operating departments.

· Recommends modifications following prototype test results.

· Designs, commissions, and supports industrial controls & electrical infrastructures.

· Works closely with engineering & production to optimize controls & HMI interfaces.

· Oversees contractors during installation to ensure work is accomplished in a safe & timely manner.

· Actively researches & identifies new technologies as they become available.

· Facilitates technical training for hourly employees.

· Assists in special projects and any other duties as assigned.

 

Safety

· Develops and maintains strong communication with all departments with the goal of Zero incidents.

· Responds to incidents pertaining to safety and security and coordinates with emergency response personnel when an incident requires medical transport.

· Supports Safety and Operations with audits, mentoring, employee involvement, observations (Behavior Based Safety) and training, in order to maintain a safe work environment.

· Observes all good manufacturing practices as required and leads by example on Safe Behavior.

· Executes tracking systems to monitor impact of specific safety initiatives.

· Assists in special projects and any other duties as assigned.

 

Administration

Human Resources

· Facilitates employee communication by conducting focus groups, round table discussions and plant visits.

· Partners closely with HR and leaders to resolve employee issues quickly and advise on appropriate corrective action.

· Assists with investigation and documentation of employee concerns and performance management issues, including evaluating disciplinary actions, by using an established set of HR tools and methods.

· Responsible for functions related to data entry and HRIS audits.

· Facilitates hourly new hire orientations/onboarding.

· Communicates with on-site temp agency reps regarding needs or concerns.

· Communicates with supervisors and Zone Leaders regarding issues with temp agency employees.

· Generates and tracks employee performance evaluations.

· Develops and populates turnover reports.

· Assists with conducting voluntary and involuntary terminations; collects and compiles appropriate data for analysis.

· Assists in special projects and any other duties as assigned.

 

Grower Relations

· Conducts reporting and analysis: Industry reporting, Year to year industry analysis, daily harvest reporting and support, product silo storage status, and crop date analysis.

· Coordinates harvest freight activity.

· Prepares professional presentations.

· Defines and documents business functions and processes within assigned department.

· Conducts change impact analysis to assess the potential implications of changes and documents business procedures, functions and requirements.

· Provides work direction to one or more technical or clerical staff or acts as a team lead on designated projects or assignments.

· Documents, recommends, and makes process and configuration changes to one or more operating systems.

· Assists in special projects, harvest duties, and any other duty as assigned.

 

Quality Systems

· Creates, edits, and updates quality assurance program elements including sampling and testing to quality standards.

· Consults with department management and personnel to identify, define and document business needs and objectives, current operational procedures, problems, input and output requirements, and levels of systems access.

· May provide work direction to one or more technical or clerical staff, or may be a team lead on designated projects.

· Documents, recommends, and implements process and configuration changes to one or more operating systems.

· Defines and documents business functions and processes within assigned department.

· Assists in special projects and any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

· Must have graduated from college within the last 18 months (or graduating soon) from a 4-year university (must be able to provide a copy of college transcripts)

· Be flexible with different shifts and weekends

· Interest in lean manufacturing/operations

· Previous leadership skills desired

FUNCTIONAL

· Trainer level on maintenance planning and PM/CM concepts and tasks (specifically PDCA and standard work)

· Captures required cost/benefit data to evaluate ideas.

· Basic reading and math skills to create and track work orders as well as calculate material quantities and measurements.

· Able to execute implementation plans.

· Creates solid cost/benefit analyses to evaluate ideas.

· Able to learn technical skills necessary for all tasks.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT 

· The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

· The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and crowded work areas.

· The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The dust levels in the work environment are usually high. (Safety protection will be provided.)

· The employee may spend 50% or more of their work hours on the plant floor.

· Must be able to work any shift, including nights, weekends, or rotating schedules.

Additional Information

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

Language skills

· Verbal fluency in Spanish desired, but not required initially. The expectation will be that the Leader Trainee will learn conversational Spanish by the end of the Wonderful Leadership Program.

· Ability to deliver small group and large group presentations.

· Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills, and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.

· Ability to present new concepts and strategies to executive leadership and technical communities.

 

Mathematical skills

· Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, along with computing ratios, and percentages.  Knowledge of statistics is desirable.

 

Reasoning ability

· Must be able to manage several assignments simultaneously. Problem solving skills are essential to this position.

· Must be able to handle extremely confidential and sensitive information.

· Must be able to apply general requirements into action as it applies to the plant. 

· Must be able to work in a team environment to accomplish goals and complete projects.

· Excellent facilitation and consulting skills are necessary to successfully perform this job.

Computer skills
