Job Description

The Specialist is a consultant with prior education, training, or experience in a related industry, such as engineering, architecture, or construction management, along with specific experience as a surety claims consultant. A Specialist monitors and investigates construction activities, reviews data, performs analyses, prepares technical deliverables and other work product, works independently, has a specialized technical skill set, and may manage other consultants.

OVERVIEW OF CONSULTANT-IV RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical / Surety Consulting

  • Effective management of assignments, meeting budget and delivery timeframes.
  • Ensuring that assignments are executed with technical proficiency, accuracy, and professionalism.
  • On-site management of construction projects.
  • Assessment of construction performance and recording construction activities to ensure compliance with construction documents.
  • Prepare technical report deliverables; provide review of deliverables prepared by team members.
  • Review and interpretation of construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Develop technical specialization and expertise that benefits the Service Area; continue personal professional development.
  • Analyze the overall health of a given construction project to determine risks associated with schedule, cost, quality, and safety.
  • Investigate and analyze surety performance bond and payment bond claims.
  • Investigate contractor default terminations.
  • Audit construction project finances.
  • Technical evaluation of construction deficiencies.
  • Review and prepare construction contract claims.
  • Analyze the overall health of a given construction project to determine risks associated with schedule, cost, quality, and safety.
  • Technical evaluation of construction deficiencies.
  • Investigate performance and payment bond claims.
  • Investigate contractor default terminations.
  • Preparation of detailed reports auditing construction projects.
  • Project schedule analysis.
  • Audit of construction project finances.
  • Review and preparation of construction contract claims.
  • Other project duties as assigned by managers.

Management

  • May provide supervision of 1-2 entry level consultants within a location.
  • May manage staffing assignments for each project within a location.
  • Oversee training and development of direct reports.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews & quarterly check-ins for direct reports.
  • Comply with company policies, practices, and procedures required of all managers.

Financial

  • Prepare consulting budget for execution of projects.
  • Review Project Detail Reports regularly to monitor and manage project budgets and make necessary adjustments to meet client expectations and improve profitability.
  • Be personally billable, based on targeted billability as set forth by senior leadership.

Business Development & Marketing

  • Participate in the Account Management Program.
  • Develop relationships with key clients.
  • Monitor and utilize the CRM in enhancing the Business Development efforts.
  • Periodically prepare and participate in technical presentations and webinars.
  • Periodically prepare technical marketing material (blogs, vlogs, project profiles, etc.).

  • Travel as required to fulfill position and project requirements.
  • Timely submission of time sheets and expenses on a weekly basis.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical, management, or engineering field (i.e.: Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, etc.)
  • Advanced degree or special training preferred
  • Alternate: Related experience considered in lieu of formal technical education on a case-by-case basis

Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of related industry experience, including two (2) years in the Service Area
  • Alternate experience considered on a case-by-case basis

Knowledge & Skills

  • Technical knowledge and skills necessary to perform responsibilities of role
  • Specialized technical skillset (examples: construction management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, architecture, etc.)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Must be able to perform complex tasks and handle multiple priorities, and have the ability to perform exceptionally under high stress conditions
  • Knowledge of computer operations and standard software packages required (spreadsheets, word processing, publishing, collaboration, video conferencing, etc.)

Special

  • Licensed Engineer or Architect not required, but will receive special consideration
  • CDT or CCCA certification will receive special consideration
  • CCM certification will receive special consideration
  • Proficiency or working knowledge of Primavera P6 will receive special consideration

Additional Information

The annualized salary range for this role is $109,000 to $135,000. 

VERTEX offers a solid total compensation package including base salary and discretionary bonus plan.
