Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are inviting applications to join our team in the School of Biological Sciences/Te Kura Mātauranga Koiora (SBS).as a permanent academic staff member in the position of Professional Teaching Fellow (1.0 FTE – PTF Level 1–2 on the University Pay Scale).

The successful candidate will contribute to our teaching programmes, including the Tertiary Foundation Certificate and undergraduate programmes. The role includes teaching lectures, laboratories, field trips and tutorials, as well as curriculum development, resource design and academic pastoral care. You will also contribute to service-related activities across the University and wider community.

In the future, opportunities may exist to teach at international partner institutions, including in China, for periods of approximately one month at a time.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about delivering impactful, research-informed and student-centred learning experiences. You will work within a collegial and collaborative academic community, coordinating undergraduate courses and delivering high-quality, accessible teaching using evidence-based pedagogical practices.

Staff at the University of Auckland are expected to contribute to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi in their work and to enact the principles outlined in Taumata Teitei, the University’s strategic plan.

A postgraduate tertiary qualification in biology is required, with subject expertise in at least one of the following areas: Ecology, Biodiversity, Evolution or Quantitative Biology.

A track record of developing innovative teaching methodologies and high-quality learning resources is preferred, as is familiarity with different teaching modalities and learning management systems. Experience coordinating undergraduate courses is advantageous, and a teaching qualification is preferred but not essential.

The role involves providing pastoral care to students with diverse learning needs, as well as contributing to other relevant teaching and academic activities across undergraduate levels. Candidates are expected to demonstrate engagement with, or a strong interest in contributing to, the scholarship of teaching and learning.

We are looking for someone who demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusiveness and has experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds, particularly Māori and Pacific students. Skills that support the inclusion of te ao Māori principles within programmes, teaching and the student experience are highly desirable.

This is a full-time (40 hrs per week), permanent role.

The remuneration is from  $105,790 (PTF1) to $ (PTF2) 116,929 per annum, and will be dependent on skills and experience
