Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

At Te Kura Mātai Ahupūngao, Department of Physics, researchers develop cutting-edge technologies in optics and photonics, explore the quantum physics of ultracold atoms and single photons, discover planets around distant stars, work on understanding the Earth's changing climate, probe the interior of volcanoes, and explore the origin and contents of the Universe. As a Department, it strives to provide an environment that reflects the demographics of its student base and Aotearoa. ur Waipapa Marae and our flagship Tuākana Māori and Pacific support programme.

The Department of Physics is home to New Zealand’s top-ranked physics programme, and our comprehensive research and stimulating teaching programmes are strengthened by a diverse technical team dedicated to fairness and equity.

We are seeking a Technician to support our teaching and research in a role that involves the development & maintenance of a diverse set of experiments in our teaching laboratories, coaching students working on physics experiments, providing mechanical and electronic support for research laboratories, and contributing to the health, safety, and well-being of staff and students. This is a great opportunity to work in a flexible, friendly environment where your work will make a difference to students, teachers, and researchers at the forefront of physics and science education.

Ideal candidates will have:

• A degree in physics or a closely related discipline (e.g. engineering).
• Enthusiasm towards experimental physics and hands-on physics teaching.
• Practical work experience gained on the job or while studying.
• Experience designing equipment, including mechanical and electronic design.
• Strong computer literacy.
• Communication skills and cross-cultural competency.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent role.

The remuneration range is $62,400 - $72,300 per annum, depending on skills and experience

You’ll be someone who enjoys combining technical expertise with collaboration and innovation. You may come from a physics, engineering, electronics, or experimental science background and thrive in practical environments where you can build, improve, and troubleshoot systems and equipment.

We’d love to hear from candidates who have:

• A degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related discipline
• Practical technical experience gained through industry, workshops, laboratories, apprenticeships, or tertiary study
• Strong problem-solving and hands-on mechanical or electronics skills
• Confidence working with technical equipment, tools, and computer systems
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people
• A proactive mindset with a strong focus on safety and continuous improvement

The following would be advantageous:

• Experience supporting laboratory teaching or scientific research environments
• Experience with electronics servicing, circuit design, or PCB layout
• Python programming or data analysis skills
• 3D CAD and mechanical design experience
• Experience working in a tertiary education or research environment
