Gus Fisher Gallery is a centre for contemporary art focusing on socially engaged exhibitions that showcase international and Aotearoa artists. Housed in a 1934 heritage building in central Tāmaki Makaurau, Gus Fisher Gallery is The University of Auckland’s flagship art gallery. The gallery is free to visit.
Gus Fisher Gallery’s extensive programme of events runs alongside its exhibitions, including performances, film screenings, workshops, panel discussions and family activities. Through these events, we aim to enable vital conversations to take place among visitors and creative communities in Tāmaki Makaurau and beyond.
Gus Fisher Gallery’s dynamic and engagement centred public programme has been a core part of the gallery’s offer to audiences. The public programme is essential to the gallery’s socially responsive vision, enabling meaningful conversations, critical dialogue, and creative responses to be foregrounded in new and unexpected ways.
We are now looking for a new individual to fill the Public Programmes & Engagement Officer position. This role is offered four days a week.
Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
From stand-out partnerships with organisations and artists to in-house practical workshops, artist-led activations and influential panel discussions, Gus Fisher Gallery’s public programme has garnered appeal and attention since its initiation in 2019.
As Public Programmes & Engagement Officer, you will play an essential role in conceiving and promoting these programmes, generating enriched and sustained relationships with external stakeholders, and bringing a continuous improvement mindset to ensure we deliver programmes engaging with our ever-changing audiences.
This is a part-time, 30-hours per-week, permanent role. The salary is $56,600 - $60,600 per annum, prorated depending on qualifications and experience.

With excellent people skills and a passion for connecting to arts lovers and culturally-curious audiences in Tāmaki Makaurau, this role offers a wealth of opportunity – from the ability to shape a prominent and ambitious programme for a breadth of audience to the chance to devise meaningful outreach initiatives to better extend the gallery’s reach and audience experience. This role offers a good amount of autonomy for someone who can attune to the gallery’s creative vision and build on the exciting work that has already been achieved.
This role is offered at four days a week, Tuesday to Friday. Evening and weekend hours will be required as defined by the gallery’s programming schedule.

Working as part of a small and dedicated team committed to contemporary arts practice and its full potential, the role of Public Programmes & Engagement Officer is split into three main areas of focus: programme conception and development, audience outreach and engagement, event organisation and delivery.
We are a small team with big ambition, so the ability to work at pace, think on your feet and bring energy and enthusiasm to the role is key as is the desire to think outside of the box and bring new ideas to the table.
