Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a Director of Marketing and Recruitment to lead an integrated Marketing and Student Recruitment function with the objective of further enhancing the University's global and local reputation as a research-led university of international standing.

You will support the effective University-wide development and integration of Marketing and Student Recruitment strategies and plans through collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Strategic Engagement), Offices of the Pro Vice-Chancellors (Māori), (Pacific) and (Equity), Market Segment and Cohort Leads, Faculties, Schools, research institutes and centres, service divisions and associated marketing and student recruitment teams across the University.

You will be responsible for the strategic leadership of the Marketing and Student Recruitment function; this includes the day-to-day operational management of a large team with several layers of management, and the overall management of your staff and financial budgets.

Your priorities will include:

  • Leading the development and implementation of innovative and effective marketing and student recruitment strategies to support the University in achieving its strategic objectives.
  • Maintaining an effective brand strategy which appropriately highlights and celebrates both the University’s strong global positioning and its unique connection to Aotearoa New Zealand and the broader Pacific region.
  • Supporting effective relationship-building with a broad range of partners, including secondary schools and pathway providers, and the provision of excellent information and advice to prospective students. This will be achieved through school visits, community events, outreach activities, social media and other communication channels, teacher support activities, University Open Days and a broad range of other partner engagement.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of a strong University visual brand identity that reinforces the University’s reputation as a leading, world-ranked, research-led tertiary institution, and which reflects/celebrates the aspirations and rich diversity of Auckland and Aotearoa.

We are seeking a strategic leader to join our high performing team. You will work to enhance the reputation of the University and improve our capability to attract and connect with both a local and global audience by highlighting the unique offering of the University of Auckland.

Your application will stand out if you are able to demonstrate experience of leadership within the education sector and ideally, an understanding of Māori and Pacific marketing and recruitment landscapes. We would also like to see experience and understanding of marketing and student recruitment activities in a research-intensive university context.

To be considered, you will need:

  • A tertiary qualification in Communications or Marketing (preferably at the Postgraduate level) or relevant tertiary qualification combined with relevant professional experience.
  • A depth of professional knowledge in marketing and/or student recruitment.
  • Extensive leadership and management experience in a large and complex organisation.
  • To be able to demonstrate proven success leading a large Marketing and/or sales team.
  • Experience of leading transformational change.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience in team building, change management and working collaboratively.
  • Experience managing business relationships with external service providers.
  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of the operational drivers to improve service performance.
