Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Our state-of-the-art Genomics Facility is seeking a motivated and capable Genomics Senior Technologist to join the technical services team on a permanent term contract.

Within this role you will interact and support researchers, academics, students and external clients needing to access a range of established and emerging genomics techniques such as DNA sequencing and transcriptomics. A large part of the role will be performing library preparation and QC analysis for genomic sequencing.

You will work with the wider technical team within the Faculty of Science and the academic lead for the facility on matters of operation and strategy.  

This is a fulltime (37.5 hours per week), Permanent role.
Remuneration: $78,500 - $94,100 dependent on experience.

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

Auckland Genomics is an analytical research centre within the School of Biological Sciences which offers a wide range of next generation sequencing (NGS) services to assist projects requiring genomics expertise. We work with academic researchers, students, and industry professionals on a variety of projects.  

He kōrero mōu | About you

Our ideal candidate will have a postgraduate degree (Masters or PhD) in a Biological Sciences discipline with experience working in a laboratory setting, ideally in genomics, molecular biology, or similar field. You will be required to work capably and independently while also functioning in a team environment.

Important Skills | Nga Pūkenga Motuhake

  • Past experience providing specialist advice and support at a senior level in Genomics or considerable demonstrated expertise in laboratory-based aspects of molecular or genomics approaches.
  • Considerable experience with the operation, maintenance, and associated software of some or all of the following: Illumina sequencers including library construction and loading, Affymetrix gene expression microarrays, Oxford Nanopore library preparation and loading, the preparation of single cell libraries using Chromium 10x equipment, bioanalyzer, Gene Chip, nanodrop, Qubit, blue pippen, DNA isolation, PCR, and qPCR methods.
  • Illumina library construction and loading of illumina machines and/or Oxford Nanopore library preparation and loading are especially desirable skills.
  • Bioinformatic skills, such as NGS data QC, NGS analysis (e.g., 16S amplicon data), knowledge of the command line, data transfer, etc., are desired but not essential.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and record keeping skills.
