Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer to join the Doctor of Clinical Psychology Programme in the School of Psychology at our central Auckland campus. You will have three areas of focus within the programme and wider university; your teaching, your research and your service and leadership.

It will be your role to provide evidence-based teaching on clinical psychology in undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the wider Clinical Psychology programme. Whilst doing this you will support students from diverse backgrounds to meet the competencies required to register with the New Zealand Psychologists Board in the Clinical Scope of Practice. You will also supervise research students towards honours and doctoral degrees. You will undertake original research and secure research funding in your area of specialisation.

The Doctor of Clinical Psychology Programme is located within the School of Psychology which has international research leaders across a wide range of research fields, including social, clinical, developmental, behavioural, cognitive neuroscience and evolutionary psychology. We have other professional postgraduate programmes in applied behaviour analysis, and speech science.

Our clinical psychology training is based on the Scientist Practitioner Model with the philosophy which emphasises the value of research as well as recognises that existing research knowledge must be adapted to the needs of any client as well as to the distinctiveness of the Aotearoa/New Zealand context.

Our teaching reflects the commitment of the Clinical Staff, the School of Psychology and the University to tangata whenua in terms of the Treaty of Waitangi. It is expected that, when conducting assessments, formulations and treatment interventions, students consider these and other cultural, social and economic origins of, and solutions to, mental health difficulties.

The School has extensive research space and a significant investment in research infrastructure and has just moved into a new building with state-of-the-art facilities with the Psychology Clinic located near Clinical Psychology staff offices.

He kōrero mōu | About you

It is essential that you have a PhD in Psychology or Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and that you are eligible to be registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board as a Clinical Psychologist with a current practicing certificate.

Your research will add to or extend on the existing areas of strength in the Clinical Programme including Adult, Child and adolescent mental health, Forensic Psychology, Child abuse and trauma, Clinical neuropsychology – child and adult, Māori pēpi-māmā attachment and parenting, Digital wellbeing tools for rangatahi, Family psychology including new motherhood, divorce and stepfamilies.

Essential Experience:

• Track record of research excellence
• Teaching experience with strong, positive teaching evaluations
• Experience of working as a clinical psychologist

Essential Skills and Knowledge

• Strong understanding of interactive and experiential learning techniques
• Strong understanding of techniques in developing communication and academic skills
• A high level of sensitivity to diverse cultures
• Strong commitment to education and the development of young professionals
