Job Description

The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

The School of Environment, Te Kuta Mātai Taiao, University of Auckland, is repositioning its teaching to be more responsive to Māori. As part of that initiative, we seek to appoint a Professional Teaching Fellow (PTF) who will lead us in curriculum redesign that embeds Te Ao Māori within our teaching practices. The intended changes will enable us to better support Māori students, Māori and non-Māori staff, and wider communities in Aotearoa New Zealand. The position has a strong focus on the obligations afforded by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and on upholding the mana of mātauranga Māori.

The PTF will work in partnership with ENV academic staff to support their teaching practices and to enhance the role of Māoritanga within their teaching delivery. The PTF will develop and deliver new teaching materials, with a particular emphasis on knowledge and topics of relevance to Māori. The position will support an inclusive curriculum and learning environment that incorporates indigenous knowledges, te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori, and will also facilitate staff and student engagement with Māori communities. The PTF is expected to mentor and support Māori students within the School in a tuākana/teina relationship. The Tertiary Foundation Certificate and Tuākana programmes influence flows of Māori students within the School, so the PTF will participate in their coordination and teaching to maintain the relationships upon which those programmes thrive.
