Civil and Environmental Engineering – Faculty of Engineering 

The University of Auckland is New Zealand's pre-eminent research-led University. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is the largest department in the Faculty of Engineering, with approximately 50 academic staff, 1,000 undergraduates and over 200 PhD students. Our structural engineering group has a reputation on research that mitigates the effects of earthquakes and other practical problems associated with concrete, steel and timber. The University of Auckland is home to one of the largest and best equipped structural testing laboratory in the southern hemisphere. This world-class facility has a 9m high reaction wall in two directions, a 20 x 10 m strong floor, a 3.6m square 15T capacity earthquake shake table, and integrated ancillary laboratories and workshops. 

About the role

The University of Auckland invites applications from exceptional candidates for a full-time permanent position in Structural Engineering at the Lecturer / Senior Lecturer / Associate Professor Levels. The successful candidate is expected to conduct high quality, impactful original research, advise students, contribute to undergraduate and graduate level teaching, and to participate in the administrative activities of the Department, the Faculty of Engineering and the University. 

Our ideal candidate

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline by the date of appointment. Candidate must have an excellent academic record as evidenced by a publication record, as well as a track record of successful mentoring of students appropriate to the appointment level sought. Individuals with experience in earthquake engineering will be considered. We are interested in receiving applications from applicants with a broad range of backgrounds including, but not limited to the following:

  • risk and reliability assessment
  • structural safety,
  • seismic protective systems,
  • urban or network resilience 
  • nonlinear analysis, 
  • bridge design, 
  • non-structural components

The department is particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates that would enhance the department’s gender diversity.
