Job Description
A cashier's job description includes:
- Processing transactions: Cashiers use a cash register to scan items, total purchases, and process payments using cash, credit, or check
- Customer service: Cashiers greet customers, answer questions, and resolve customer service issues
- Handling returns: Cashiers facilitate return transactions
- Issuing receipts: Cashiers issue receipts, refunds, or tickets to customers
- Redeeming coupons: Cashiers redeem stamps and coupons
- Balancing the cash register: Cashiers balance the cash register and determine change
- Ensuring pricing is correct: Cashiers refer to price sheets and sale bulletins to ensure prices are up-to-date
Some skills that are useful for cashiers include: Detail-focused customer support, Transaction management, Product knowledge, and Conflict resolution.
Qualifications
Cashiers should have a variety of skills and qualifications, including:
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent
- Customer service: Experience in customer service is desirable. Cashiers should be able to answer questions, resolve complaints, and provide a positive shopping experience
- Communication: Cashiers should have strong communication skills. They should be able to diffuse tensions and align policies with empathy
- Math and computer skills: Cashiers should have basic math and computer skills. They should be able to count money, verify its authenticity, and process credit and debit card transactions
- Cash handling: Cashiers should be familiar with cash desk equipment, such as point-of-sale (POS) machines, scanners, and cash drawers. They should be able to handle a high volume of transactions.
- Attention to detail: Cashiers should be alert and attentive to details. They should be able to balance the cash register at the end of their shift
- Teamwork: Cashiers should be able to work in a team and follow instructions.
Cashiers work in a variety of establishments, including grocery stores and retail stores. They are responsible for receiving orders, processing them through a register, collecting money and change, and producing receipts.
