Job Description

The Tractor Driver operates the tractor in a safe and productive manner.  Work with other colleagues to effectively harvest tomatoes to transport them to the processing facilities.

All jobs are 40 hours or more per week. $13.5 per hour, depending on the position.

Responsibilities:

  • Fill out and go through the Tractor Pre-Operational Checklist daily.
    • Inspect the tractor for leaks, cracks, dents and flats before operating, assist harvester driver and mechanic with any repairs or cleaning needed.
    • Check trailers for damages before using and report any damaged equipment to the mechanic immediately.
    • End of lunch duties: Fuel tractor and clean harvester
    • End of shift duties: clean tractor cab and windows, No smoking in the cab, clean harvester and help perform preventive maintenance on harvester.
    • Grease fittings when necessary.
  • Check surroundings and equipment while driving the tractor.
    • Look out for water valves, telephone poles, ditches, other equipment etc…
    • Maintain eye contact and communication with the sorters and harvester drivers to maximize productivity and anticipate emergencies.
    • Filling the trailers: Communicate with the harvester driver to fill the trailers correctly.
    • Drive safely by using the proper speed and field conditions to transport the trailers to and from the Harvester.
    • Report all equipment damages immediately to the mechanic
    • Always watch the quality of the harvesting job and notify harvester driver if there are any problems.

  • Align properly to the trailer and reverse slowly to engage the kingpin with the dolly
    • Raise the landing gear before moving the trailer
    • Release the air brakes before pulling the trailer
    • Ensure that the 5thwheel locks before moving trailer
    • Lower the landing gear after parking the trailer
    • Unhook trailer after parking

Safety:

  • Wear seat belt while operating the tractor
  • Set the hand brakes before getting off the tractor (if available)
  • Use the horn around blind spots or in the presence of pedestrians
  • Wear hearing protection, safety glasses, safety vest, and dust mask
  • Wear appropriate shoes, closed-toe with heals
  • Do not wear lose fitting clothing around moving machinery
  • Do not use cell phone while operating the tractor
  • Do not operate the tractor if you feel tired, drunk or using drugs
  • Turn off the motor whenever you leave the cabin
  • Coordinate breaks & lunch with the harvester driver

 

Qualifications

  • No experience necessary
  • Season runs approximately July through October
  • 40+ hours/week
  • $13.50/hour starting
  • Must be available for night and weekend shifts
