Job Description

About the Role:

The Volunteer Services Manager will manage and support a staff team to champion and harness the passion of volunteers committed to AFTD’s mission. The Volunteer Services Manager will design and implement mechanisms to grow the number of volunteers engaged in AFTD’s mission and foster the development of volunteer leaders for the organization. They will work collaboratively with all departments to develop and maintain a flexible, scalable array of volunteer opportunities and roles that respond to organization and community needs. The Volunteer Services Manager will oversee the volunteer management cycle to recruit, screen, train, support, track and report on volunteer efforts. They will work closely with the Senior Director of Programs to inform strategic planning, develop and manage annual volunteer services goals and budget, and evaluate the impact of volunteer efforts. The Volunteer Services Manager will have extensive interaction with all aspects of the constituency, including Board members, key volunteers, and staff, and community partners and will work closely with these constituents, building and maintaining collaborative efforts to expand the engagement of volunteers from diverse backgrounds to advance the organization’s mission.

Essential Job Functions

  •  Volunteer Services Oversight: Work with department heads to assess needs and provide opportunities for volunteer engagement throughout the organization, including in awareness, support, education, research and advocacy. Develop and implement processes for all aspects of the volunteer experience, including mechanisms for evaluation of AFTD’s volunteer services. Collaborate with the advancement team to ensure visibility of volunteers on AFTD’s website and in publications, social media, and in our overall fundraising and events strategies. Coordinates closely with AFTD’s Special Events Manager to support their efforts to steward fundraising/grassroots events volunteers. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and directs efforts to expand the inclusion of volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Volunteer Management: Develop replicable, efficient practices and procedures for volunteer recruitment, orientation/onboarding, retention, and recognition. Manage and evaluate volunteer activities and roles on an ongoing basis. Develop training materials and tools for volunteers pertaining to their chosen activities and responsibilities. Identify and address volunteer leadership training needs to foster retention and deep engagement with the organization.
  • Staff Management: Provide ongoing supervision, support, and problem-solving assistance to Volunteer Coordinators in the fulfillment of their roles. Manage the flow of work within their assigned responsibilities in support of department goals.

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this role:

  •  Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree in a social service field and/or graduate certificate in volunteer management strongly preferred
  •  Minimum of 4 years of volunteer management experience required; knowledge of current trends, resources and information related to volunteer management a plus
  •  Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience
  •  Ability to organize, plan, make decisions and problem solve in a timely manner required
  •  Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong judge of character and the ability to interact and build relationships with a diverse constituency required
  •  A proven record of success in working with a team to achieve common goals required
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
  • Strong Microsoft Office Suite skills required, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  •  Periodic evening and weekend availability to accommodate volunteer schedules, and travel for organization meetings and events as needed.
