The Aparecio Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was designed as an economic development strategy to lift women out of poverty and as a community development approach to build the leadership capacity of low-income women. The Aparecio Foundation provides academic support and scholarship programs for high-potential, low-income women in public high schools through an eight-year multiple-mentor program.

This is a unpaid Volunteer / Intern position.

Job Description

The Mentor’s primary goal is to build a strong mentoring relationship with his/her mentee through personal and professional support, guidance, counseling, and encouragement. The Mentor serves as a role model for mentees, and helps motivate and coach his/her mentee throughout the duration of the eight-year mentoring program. The Mentor will be required to maintain communication with his/her mentee, attend required in-person events related to relationship-building and academic and professional development, and provide a safe and respectful environment that fosters personal and professional growth. 

Description of Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized mentoring to mentee(s) via in-person, telephone, and email meetings/correspondence.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled educational, professional development, and networking activities with mentee(s) to provide support and guidance.
  • Maintain close mentoring relationship with mentee(s) by jointly developing and tracking mentee goals, sharing professional experiences and networks as appropriate, and upholding strong two-way communications.
  • Confer with Mentoring Program staff to discuss mentoring goals, and progress.
  • Participate in Mentor Training Program to learn mentoring standards and guidelines.
  • Complete evaluation surveys, hour/activity logs, and other paperwork as requested.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge is defined as the acquisition of information stored in memory through experience and learning.
  • Skills represent the practical aspect of knowledge. The implementation of knowledge in daily tasks that can be acquired or developed through training is termed as skill.
  • Lastly, ability is characterized as the stable and abstract behavioral and cognitive capacity.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Experience with a mentoring program preferred
  • Demonstrated volunteer experience required
  • Able to devote 5 hours/week to the mentoring program
  • Strong professional network and proven academic and professional success
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills
