Job Description
The mission of the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) is to promote and support a workforce system that creates value and offers employers, individuals and communities the opportunity to achieve and sustain economic prosperity. The Labor Market and Career Information (LMCI) program strives to improve the way Texans make job, career and educational decisions by providing useful and reliable information about careers, educational training options and jobs. LMCI provides key economic data about occupations and in-demand industries along with information about labor market trends and economic conditions to help job seekers, employers, economic development entities and local workforce development boards make informed choices. LMCI gathers and provides information on the labor market, educational programs and training opportunities along with career planning and career development principles to help its customers evaluate current market trends in order to design and deliver services to businesses and job seekers. TWC's LMCI department is seeking an Economist I to join their team performing routine (journey-level) economic work in the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) unit.
The Economist I:
-Collects and processes employment, wage, and business information for individual establishments through surveys, such as the Multiple Worksite Report (MWR) and the Annual Refiling Survey (ARS).
-Validates data through research and analysis at the micro and macro levels in order to document and reconcile employment and wages by industry, location, employment, wages and contributions. Work performance includes heavy periods of in-depth review of employer data to track, explain, and resolve inconsistencies.
-Performs extensive research using databases, internet and software as analytical and research tools.
-Collects and validates confidential data from reluctant employers.
-Assigns North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) industry and geographic codes following the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) procedures and guidelines.
-Keys data directly into the appropriate BLS or Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) automated systems.
-Responds to data requests for both internal and external customers.
-Complies with BLS and TWC rules of confidentiality.
Preferred:
-Works in a fast paced, team-oriented environment with an emphasis on excellence and continuous improvement.
-Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills are highly preferred.
-Must have ability to prioritize workload and manage time effectively.
-Position involves multi-tasking, attention to detail, and a high degree of accuracy. Skill in/knowledge of personal computers, Microsoft Office Suite software (Outlook, Access, Excel, Word, etc.) strongly preferred.
-Knowledge of LMCI programs, products, and services preferred.
A writing sample will be given at time of interview.
The salary for this position is $3,293.41 per month.
Qualifications
Economist I - Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with courses in economics, statistics, mathematics, business, or public administration. Twelve semester hours of graduate study from an accredited college or university will satisfy the minimum qualifications. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university will satisfy the minimum qualifications. One year of full-time experience in economic research or statistical or analytical work may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required college.
