The Infrastructure Engineering team design, develop and operate all infrastructure used by Tesco Technology across our data centres, offices, stores and distribution centres. This encompasses multiple domains; private and public cloud, connectivity, end-user computing, CI/CD and monitoring toolkit. This includes both 3rd party and internally developed infrastructure applications and infrastructure that support the wider Tesco business. 

Summary: The Head of Systems Engineering role is accountable for determining the strategic roadmap for their technical area (Database Operations), whilst providing leadership for their team. In this role, you will communicate with employees, stakeholders, customers, vendors to ensure our company’s technologies are developed and used appropriately. With a good understanding of current technological trends and variety of business concepts, able to demonstrate strategic thinking and strong business acumen. 

• Manage activities of members of the systems engineering job family building a team culture for continuous improvement and environment where engineers want to work. I will recruit and support the development of members of staff.
• Ensure my team meets the required quality standards commitments and objectives as defined in the acceptance criteria and definitions of done for all tasks undertaken.
• Drives adoption of new tools and techniques being able to understand their value and impact.
• Understand and apply current application development techniques (12 factor app) and their implications
• Build a team with structure and capabilities to support incidents in live and support the relationship to Engineering.
• Keep my technical skills up to date and keep track of new technologies processes understanding how they might benefit the Technology team and wider Tesco.
• Manage team performance and improve capabilities by defining training plans objectives providing feedbacks
• Managing external suppliers and responsible for measuring improving service provided.
• Managing stakeholder communication and escalations.
• Represent the Infrastructure/systems department across all of Technology.
• Ensure that right changes are approved and implemented by team in production systems.

Database skills 

• Leads the design & development, quality, and economics of database delivery across on-prem and cloud environments
• Leads the development of database automation tools that provides better developer experience through developer self-service
• Work with application partners to assimilate new DB technology into scalable software solutions, leveraging and contributing to engineering best practices across the company
• Drives the optimization of data footprint and rationalization of applications
• Influence the product and technology roadmap with strategic database vendors, ensuring Tesco requirements are included in the upcoming releases
• Broad understanding of  database implementation, data architecture and systems design experience for large applications
• Good understanding of AIOps implementation in Database landscape
• A good understanding of DB licensing and optimization of resources for better use of licenses

Platform Ops skills

• Knowledge of wider Infrastructure technologies in platforms, cloud, network, data systems, monitoring & management tooling, automation
• Understanding of software engineering technologies, application deployment and performance considerations and its impact on infrastructure
• Experience in working with VMware virtualization, Storage and SAN infrastructure, Datacentre technologies, server hardware, edge computing technologies.
• Proven experience in implementing platform automation and self-healing solutions and achieving operational efficiency using data analytics and metrics.
• Prior experience in managing Windows and UNIX based operating system platforms in cloud, on-prem and on the edge and database operations 
• Deep understanding of public and private cloud infrastructure, Containers, IaC, cloud cost optimisation, cloud security and operations. 
• Understanding of Dev & CI/CD toolset – Jenkins, GitHub, Chef, Nexus etc and DevOps methodology
