The Infrastructure Engineering team design, develop and operate all infrastructure used by Tesco Technology across our data centres, offices, stores and distribution centres. This encompasses multiple domains; private and public cloud, connectivity, end-user computing, CI/CD and monitoring toolkit. This includes both 3rd party and internally developed infrastructure applications and infrastructure that support the wider Tesco business. 

Job Description

Role Summary:

The Head of Systems Engineering role is accountable for determining the strategic roadmap for their technical area whilst providing leadership for their team. In this role you will communicate with employees stakeholders customers vendors to ensure our company’s technologies are developed and used appropriately. With a good understanding of current technological trends and variety of business concepts able to demonstrate strategic thinking and strong business acumen.

As a HoSE I can:

  • Lead a team to develop technical aspects of the company’s strategy to ensure alignment with its business goals.
  • Discover and implement new technologies that yield competitive advantage.
  • Supervise system infrastructure to ensure functionality and efficiency.
  • Monitor KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and IT budgets to assess the success of technology/service deliveries.
  • Use stakeholders’ feedback to drive necessary improvements and adjustments to technology
  • Represent Infrastructure/Systems Engineering across all of Tesco Technology and with suppliers
  • Lead an engineering team(s) who are responsible for developing delivering and running the Technology services and products.
  • Collaborates with other Engineering Department Leaders and Leads to ensure that service delivery and project requirements are being met.
  • Prerequisites for Role Skills as demonstrated by Systems Engineering Manager or prior experience of leading enterprise technology departments.

Qualifications

Technology Understanding:

Person in this role expected to have strong conceptual understanding and experience in following workplace solutions and services:

  • Active directory and Microsoft 365 productivity and collaboration stack
  • Endpoints lifecycle management including Windows/Mac/Android devices
  • File and Print services
  • Citrix and VMware Horizon virtualisation
  • Device management platforms – MECM JAMF-pro SOTI
  • Cisco Telephony and telepresence including contact centres

Operations:

  • Oversees administration and availability of systems and services that the team is accountable for.
  • Ensure security of data network access and backup systems.
  • Establish global standards and ensure these are enforced and adhered to.
  • Manage and lead multiple engineering teams to support services and development.
  • Improve technical excellence in the teams for meeting technical standards and processes.
  • Drive long-term and strategic initiatives to improve service and operational efficiency.
  • Manage vendor contracts maintenance agreements and upgrades.
  • Oversee and guide changes to services and how to request changes in response to incidents or problems to mitigate the impact of service unavailability – Will review
  • Own and drive major incidents with clear post-incident root cause analysis documentation.
  • Identify the correct procedures or channels for resolution of unique challenges.
  • Define strategic and operational objectives which correlates with the business goals or vision.
  • Aware of all high-impact changes and projects in Infrastructure Services and take proactive measures to ensure the stability of service.
  • Drive service improvements that are focused on customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Responsible for hiring objective setting coaching employees and support for individual's career growth.
  • Cultivates innovative ideas and challenges the status quo.

Finance & Commercials:

  • Familiarity with business and financial principles including managing budgeting and forecasting.
  • Experience contributing or running RFP processes.
  • Ability to support business cases by evaluating suitable products for their technology and commercial impact on Tesco and assist the business team in making the right decision.
  • Understand how the procurement process works in Tesco and can effectively apply the knowledge in planning and influencing product roadmaps.
  • With a good understanding of translating the maintenance cost of any services in engineering analyse explore and identify opportunities to reduce the maintenance cost of services.
