About the Tesco Technology Monitoring Capability Team

The Application Performance Monitoring Team is one track within the Monitoring Capability Team in which a mixture of Product Owners and System Engineers collaborate to: own their product roadmaps drive continuous improvements to our monitoring platforms and innovate to meet the changing needs of the department. By doing this we support the rest of Tesco Technology to monitor the health and performance of their varied technology stacks delivering fast and accurate insight.

The team’s primary responsibilities are to roll-out maintain and improve our enterprise APM suite and our synthetics testing solutions.


The role: System Engineer I – Application Performance Monitoring Team

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities:
•Help application teams to adopt our tools efficiently and correctly in order to maximise the value for them
•Identify drive and deliver service improvements across our tools
•Be actively involved in incident management problem management and root cause analysis in order to help maintain high levels of service availability and performance
•Help to continuously improve the monitoring of our own tools and platforms for continued service excellence
•Engage stakeholders across Tesco Technology to understand their requirements and deliver customised solutions to meet their evolving needs
•Provide training and education to our Tesco Technology colleagues around the world
•Help to build documentation for training and support across all our products
•Engage with the support and product teams from multiple vendors to drive issue resolution and influence product decisions
•Identify opportunities across the monitoring ecosystem to help drive better value for Tesco


Key skills and experience

You’ll need to demonstrate:
•Experience implementing configuring and maintaining an enterprise APM solution
•Experience creating meaningful reports and dashboards
•Experience using pre-built and custom-made extensions to enhance the capabilities of an APM solution
•An understanding of the differing challenges and opportunities that different programming languages bring ideally with some coding experience
•A strong understanding of the common metrics used for application infrastructure end-user synthetics and database monitoring
•Operational experience to support root cause diagnosis and incident resolution
•Familiarity with synthetics testing and Selenium
•Experience working with RESTful APIs
•Good working knowledge of a scripting language (ideally Python3)
•Experience working in an agile environment
•Experience working in a DevOps team
•Experience working with cloud technologies particularly within Azure and AWS
•Windows and Linux system administration tasks
•An understanding of why various security concepts such as Single Sign On (SSO) Role Based Access (RBAC) and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) are important
•Willingness to engage customers and stakeholders to understand their specific needs and requirements
•An understanding of automation and the benefits is can bring
•Familiarity with container technologies
