Title: Facilities & HSE Technician
Location: Durham, NC
Duration: 6 Months

Job Summary
At Alcon, we help people see brilliantly. The Facilities Tech 2 plays a key hands-on role maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing critical site infrastructure, mechanical systems, and utility equipment. Reporting directly to the Facilities and HSE Manager, this position acts as an essential technical helper and mechanical troubleshooter, balancing day-to-day HVAC upkeep with general building maintenance (including drywall and painting), routine site safety checks, and hazardous waste support across the Durham facility. Key Responsibilities 
• HVAC & Mechanical Troubleshooting (Primary Focus): o Perform hands-on troubleshooting, preventive maintenance (PM), and mechanical repairs on Air Handling Units (AHUs), Rooftop Units (RTUs), Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes, chillers, boilers, exhaust fans, and circulating pumps. o Execute routine mechanical upkeep, including filter changes, belt replacements, coil cleanings, motor greasing, and sensor swaps to keep site air systems running reliably. o Assist in diagnosing air flow issues, system pressure drifts, and basic electrical/control faults across mechanical utility equipment. 
• Building Automation & Controls (BAS): o Serve as a daily operator on the Siemens Desigo CC building management system. o Respond to environmental and equipment alarms, clear basic control faults, check system setpoints, and assist with control loop troubleshooting. 
• Routine Maintenance, General Trades & Safety Inspections: o Perform routine architectural and general building upkeep, including drywall patching/repair, spackling, sanding, and interior painting/touch-ups across plant, lab, and office spaces. o Conduct basic facility maintenance action items such as light bulb/ballast replacements and general hardware repairs.
Execute weekly/monthly life-safety and OSHA inspections, including emergency eyewash stations, safety showers, and fire extinguisher checks. o Assist the HSE team with hazardous waste collection, handling, drum labeling, and spill response in accordance with HAZWOPER guidelines. 
• General Compliance & Work Documentation: o Complete assigned work orders and document routine PM tasks in the site Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). o Follow basic GxP entry protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs) when performing maintenance in controlled areas. o Escort third-party contractors and vendors during specialized system repairs or regulatory testing.
 
Minimum Requirements
• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; trade school or technical coursework in HVAC/R, Mechanical Maintenance, or Industrial Automation preferred.
• Experience: 3–5 years of hands-on experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial, commercial, or institutional HVAC and facility mechanical systems, including general building trades (drywall/painting).
• Physical Capability: Ability to routinely lift, carry, push, and pull equipment or mechanical parts weighing up to 80 lbs unassisted.
• Language: Ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English. 

Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
• Certifications: o EPA Section 608 Universal Certification required. o HAZWOPER Certification (24-hr or 40-hr) / Hazardous Waste handling training required (or ability to complete within 90 days of hire).
• Practical experience using Siemens Desigo CC or equivalent BAS software to monitor and troubleshoot building systems.
• Comfort and proficiency using basic hand/power tools, plastering/finishing equipment, and interior painting materials for structural upkeep.
• Familiarity working in a regulated, commercial manufacturing, or pharmaceutical facility.
• Strong mechanical aptitudes, including ability to read basic electrical schematics, piping diagrams, and mechanical blueprints.
 
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
• Physical Demands: Must be able to routinely lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding, work in elevated mechanical spaces, maneuver heavy tools/motors, and stand, kneel, bend, or walk for extended periods during shift.
• Shift & Availability: Standard Day Shift (8-5/7-4); required participation in an on-call rotational schedule for facility emergencies.
• Environment: On-site position in Durham, NC. Work involves mechanical rooms, central utility spaces, roof areas, office/lab spaces, and occasional access to controlled production environments.
