Job Description

As a development organization, TCS R&D generates applications and solutions across the landscape of our creative studio's businesses.

The R&D Department Manager is responsible for administering the development staff of a specific geographical region and takes ownership of the execution of operational strategies and priority tasks in coordination with global Senior R&D management and local Lead Developers and R&D Supervisors.  The department manager operates as an advocate for local developers and seeks to empower their staff to achieve at the highest levels.  They work closely with project management and Heads of Department to promote a standard of clear and collaborative communication while helping to cast projects utilizing their knowledge of their team.

You will help manage projects that define and iterate the tools and technologies used to create the stunning imagery for our films, shows and commercials. As part of this you will be working with a like-minded, international team of developers and stakeholders that will give you the chance to learn, grow, collaborate, and share knowledge. 

This is a fast-paced and exciting environment that comes with daily creative and administrative challenges. It requires a self-starting manager who can use lateral thinking and pragmatic problem-solving to remove complexity and create solutions, that are then communicated effectively to their team and a variety of stakeholders. 

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Head of Operations and work to roll out and manage new processes, strategies, and initiatives in TCS R&D
  • Ensure the department delivers a high level of service to internal stakeholders.
  • Working with Head(s) of Software and Head of Operations to increase the productivity and efficiency of the department.
  • Liaising with HR, Recruitment, Facilities, and Resource Manager.
  • Administering team members’ performance including formal reviews (in partnership with Leads, Supervisors, and Heads of department) 
  • Assisting with career growth for developers and operations staff - in partnership with technical leadership
  • Leading a team of coordinators and assistants and taking responsibility for local Project Managers'
  • Providing a comfortable working environment, keeping staff motivated and engaged
  • Helping to spearhead team-building initiatives
  • Conduct regular 1:1’s with team members
  • Ensuring project management and reporting standards are met and assisting with department reporting overall including weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.
  • Assisting with internal stakeholder negotiations and casting for projects
  • Monitoring the progress of projects and taking ownership of issues that arise to ensure they are communicated and resolved.
  • Ensuring compliance with global operational standards
  • Administering onboarding and staff's connection to services and support from the wider company
  • Ensuring inclusivity, empathy, and mutual respect 

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Experience in project management or development management
  • Experience with common project mgmt. tools and methodologies - especially Jira
  • Experience with and understanding of Agile and Scrum practices.
  • Demonstrated abilities in people management.
  • An understanding of the software development lifecycle
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Adept in skillfully juggling tasks; organized and focused
  • A strong commitment to service, quality, and reliability
  • A personable nature who knows how to be upbeat and motivate teams in times of delivery and crunch.
  • A degree in VFX or software engineering would be an advantage.
  • Experience in production or department management in VFX or games would be an advantage.
