Job Description

We are looking for somebody with a superb eye for cinematography who is an excellent visual storyteller in their own right. We need somebody who will not only translate storyboard and animatic into CG sequences, but will also have a keen understanding of how to develop and enhance the storytelling with creative camera framing and movement.   You will need to collaborate closely with our director to realise his artistic vision. At the same time you must be able to direct, manage and motivate our team of highly talented layout artists. Our prospective Layout Supervisor will need to combine technical and artistic knowhow with perceptive leadership. You should have the enthusiasm and ambition to inspire our team to surpass the top quality work they are already producing. The successful candidate will play a central role in ensuring Mikros continues to create top-class feature entertainment.  

  • Work closely with the department coordinator to deliver sequences on time and within production quotas
  • Assign, supervise and review the work of the layout team
  • Work closely with director, VFX and CG supervisors, especially during layout reviews to define and maintain the visual style and storytelling of the film
  • Collaborate with the coordination team to communicate notes and retakes to artists and ensure these are addressed
  • Define the layout department’s workflow. Improve existing procedures to streamline production. Train and supervise the layout team throughout production. Identify any inefficiencies within the department and work with the team at Mikros to correct these
  • Set the level for, monitor and maintain the consistency and quality of the work done by the layout team
  • Work closely with other supervisors to ensure smooth transitions into animation and rendering
  • Anticipate, analyse and find solutions to problems (both creative and technical) within the storyboard
  • Prepare guidelines and instructions for the modelling artists, environment and set-dressing team
  • Assist in the recruitment of new artists and the development of existing talent 
  • Perform other related tasks as required
  • Act as spokesperson for the layout department

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years experience in a similar role
  • At least 5 years experience working on animated feature films / CG production experience – working on an animated feature would be a bonus
  • College diploma or equivalent in 2D or 3D computer graphics, graphics or visual arts
  • Proven expertise in cinematography, camera, composition and scene layout for animated films
  • Excellent knowledge of MAYA
  • Comfortable working in a LINUX environment
  • An effective communicator possessing good written and spoken English. Writing and speaking French would be a big bonus but is not essential
  • Excellent verbal and visual communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of Shotgun and other technical resources
  • A natural affinity with collaborating with and leading a team
  • A multi-tasker and pro-active problem-solver;
  • Willing to work in Montreal.
