Job Description

The Role

We are looking for a Technical Consultant to support our Energy Codes Team. This role sits within the Energy Codes team in Gemserv’s Energy Business Unit whose responsibilities include working closely with technical expert committees, to ensure that the Smart Meter infrastructure is designed effectively, tested properly and working correctly, as defined by the Smart Energy Code (SEC).  

In your role you will support our Technical Sub-Committees; primarily the Technical and Business Architecture Sub Committee (TABASC), but also as required the Testing Advisory Group (TAG) and Operations Group (OPSG), by writing and reviewing papers and reports, managing processes and updates to technical documents and procedures, and owning actions arising from monthly meetings. As well as playing a leading role in the Sub-Committees, you will support projects, assess the technical impact of SEC change modifications, and investigate  improvements to services, reporting and processes, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and providing expertise to deliver industry requirements.  You will also manage the delivery of SECAS’s obligations to ensure that the Central Products List (CPL) is maintained and updated in accordance with the SEC.  

The Sub-Committees comprise of Energy Industry representatives such as Energy Suppliers and Network Operators, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), and the Data Communications Company (DCC), who maintain the technical infrastructure. You will work closely with the DCC in preparation for each meeting, and will also engage with the end users (e.g. Energy Suppliers) to ensure that their issues and needs are understood.  

You will engage with technical experts across the business and the wider Energy Codes Team, which comprises over 60 motivated individuals who pride themselves on quality of delivery while also fostering a collaborative and fun atmosphere. We operate a hybrid working approach with a mix of office and remote working, with the team expected to be in Gemserv’s London office for part of the week. 


Responsibilities

As a Consultant for Technical Operations, you will: 

  • Develop and present reports and technical papers for consideration by the Technical Sub-Committees (TABASC, TAG and OPSG)  

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with the Chairs and attendees of these committees  

  • Collaborate with the Data Communications Company (DCC) on matters relating to the technical and operational aspects of the SEC  

  • Quality review Sub-Committee papers to ensure accuracy and consistency 

  • Develop an understanding of priorities and key issues for SEC Parties (e.g. Energy Suppliers); engaging with Parties to develop potential changes to ways of working  

  • Provide oversight and leadership on projects resulting from matters discussed  

  • Manage and oversee entries onto the Central Products List, ensuring adherence to procedures, with issues resolved, and procedures maintained  

  • Support the SEC Modification process, providing expertise and steer to industry on technical, operational and governance requirements  

  • Review and present updates to SEC Parties on industry reporting and performance  

  • Actively manage outstanding actions and issues relating to the Technical Sub-Committees  

  • Identify and implement process improvements, including digitalisation

Requirements

Successful candidates will also need:

  • Have a background in Smart-metering  

  • Have the skills, knowledge and technical confidence to work with industry stakeholders, committees and Chairs  

  • Have a solid understanding of the technical architecture underpinning GB smart metering  

  • Have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, able to understand and communicate complex issues and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders  

  • Have strong client and stakeholder management skills  

  • Have excellent planning and organisational abilities  

  • Strive for excellence in their work and that of others, able to deliver high quality work, being methodical, diligent and paying attention to the detail  

  • Be proactive in identifying and addressing the client's requirements  

  • Be degree educated or have equivalent professional experience 

  • Practical experience using Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

  • Excellent organisational abilities, with a focus on attention to detail

  • Good time management skills and the ability to work to deadlines

  • Ability to build relationships with employees at all levels and to be a team player

  • Confidence and enthusiasm to present to colleagues and other stakeholders
