DVLA currently uses in-house interaction design/concept creation capability to design and improve it's digital services. Demand for this capability outstrips what we resource. We aim to bolster the in-house team with 3 interaction designers to support the development and continuous improvement of our digital services.

Job Description

About the work

Who the specialist will work with 

The three specialists will be required to work closely with DVLA's internal Customer Insight Unit and it's Service Design Leads to help develop and shape DVLA services. The Customer Insight Unit will determine the allocation of the specialists via the needs of the Service Design Leads. The Service Design Leads will then task manage the resources within the service teams they have responsibility for and the resources will work alongside a mix of DVLA and other third party suppliers develop and support the service within their capability skillset.

What the specialist will work on 

Supplement DVLA's in-house interaction design resource team with a team of 3 interaction design specialists. These specialists will support strategic priorities within the development and maintenance of the public services DVLA provides. The specialists will also support the continuous improvement of other DVLA digital services in live, and public beta phase, including View Driver Licence, Share Driver Licence and Online Enforcement Penalty Payment. The specialists will also be required to assist via knowledge/skills transfer to DVLA interaction Design Trainee's the growth of DVLA's internal capability within the field.

The work will take place at the main DVLA site in Swansea. The full address is below: Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency, Longview Road, Morriston, Swansea SA6 7JL.

Working arrangements 

As well as providing skill/knowledge transfer to the customer's in house resources, the specialists will help train 4 additional trainee designers who will be with the team 2-3 days per week. All of DVLA's service design teams work via the AGILE methodology. The limit for travel expenses is £90 for an overnight stay and £45 pound for travelling from home outside a 75 mile radius to DVLA's main site. The specialists will be expected to work for 8 hours per day, 5 days a week onsite during agreed business hours.

Security clearance The resources will need to prove that they have full security checks (SC) with a minimum of 5 years UK residency in place.

Qualifications

Skills and experience

Essential skills and experience 

  • Be able to knowledge transfer and upskill 2-4 DVLA trainee Interaction designers 2-3 days per week.
  • Have proven knowledge and expertise of custom service design of large scale organisations, systems and associated business processes.
  • Have the ability to build software/paper based prototypes - Software Engineer skills.
  • Have experience operating in an AGILE environment
  • Have the ability to build concepts for inclusion in service design - root cause analysis, user insight and needs identification.
  • Have the ability to produce content and accessibility design.
  • Have experience of service design in large organisations.
  • Have excellent communication skills for engagement with stakeholders.

Nice-to-have skills and experience 

  • Produce evidence of supporting the continuous improvement of digital services in public beta and live phases.
  • Display proven knowledge and expertise of custom service design of large scale organisations and systems and associated business processes.
  • Evidence previous interactions of skills transfer and knowledge sharing to organisational staff.
