Job Description

This role is responsible for the maintenance of TAL’s Risk philosophy and profitability through excellent underwriting standards and building relationships with a panel of allocated TAL Advisers.

In this role you will: 

  • Provide quality underwriting service in line with TAL’s Underwriting Philosophy and Practices in order to maintain a profitable risk portfolio.
  • Asses New Applications within agreed timeframes and service standards.
  • Complete Tele-Underwriting where appropriate or required.
  • Decline or defer cases when appropriate and following internal procedures.
  • Refer cases through appropriate channels when required.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough Underwriting Notes when required.
  • Assist with Claim Referrals within agreed service standards and timeframes.
  • Communicates openly to engage customers, peers and partners using a variety of communication strategies (face-to-face, written, telephone and presentations).
  • Contributes to proactive, consistent customer experience across the underwriting team, identifying customer issues and opportunities to resolve them.
  • Demonstrates a strong business acumen, with a sound knowledge of current policies and procedures and how to apply them.
  • Makes informed and timely decisions when appropriate, weighing up risks and outcomes using sound risk awareness and management practices.

Qualifications

  • Over 5 years underwriting experience gained in an environment requiring development of new and innovative approaches.
  • Certificate IV in Life Insurance or equivalent.
  • Strong medical and underwriting skills and qualifications.
  • Tertiary qualification in Business, Finance, Economics, or related discipline.
  • In depth knowledge of life insurance underwriting philosophies, approaches, and technologies.
  • Excellent knowledge of trends in life insurance, underwriting and innovation.
  • Strong Medical, Financial and Systems knowledge.
  • Commercially astute and a strong customer focus.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and plan own work with high attention to detail.
  • Provide support, training, and assistance in answering more technical and complex questions for less experienced Underwriters in the team, offer input, suggestions and decisions as required.
  • Participate in special projects by providing technical input as and when required.
  • Professional Development – attend and actively participate in training opportunities, both internal and external.
  • Conduct file reviews of those less experienced Underwriters.
  • Good working knowledge of professional standards and codes.
  • Previous Underwriting Authority Limits.
  • Ability to work autonomously.
