Job Description

The Director of Design and Engineering is responsible for overseeing design and engineering within T5 Construction Services. They will play a key role in driving efficiency, quality, and profitability across construction projects. They will oversee project teams that are executing mission critical projects across the country.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In this role, the candidate will be responsible for the day-to-day relationships with client companies and their teams.
  • This position will also be responsible for providing design consulting services (can range from project concept to final delivery stage) to customers (internal and external) as well as leading a team of internal subject matter experts in MEP disciplines specific to data centers.
  • In addition, the ideal candidate will support strategies for sales and distribution opportunities within the organization, analyzing market trends, making and/or supporting recommendations and help grow the Construction Business Unit business that will help exceed revenue goals, hit profitability targets and grow our market share.
  • The ideal candidate should have the ability to engage at a high level, collaborate and build relationships with executive internal and external stakeholders and uncover new design opportunities as well as review existing documentation to provide design direction.
  • Manage the overall business relationship with key customers in order to drive new business and existing customer satisfaction.
  • Drive retention and business development by identifying strategic opportunities or issues and taking the necessary actions.
  • Oversee end to end processes to ensure an exceptional customer experience.
  • Work closely with customers (internal and external) to gather feedback on challenges and opportunities with individual agencies/customers, identify systemic issues and opportunities, initiate action plans to improve T5CS systems.
  • Preparing technical reports (inclusive of written analysis, drawings, illustrations, calculations, etc.) to deliver design and construction recommendations.
  • Experience with Architecture and/or Engineering Design regulatory environment and monitoring regulatory changes.
  • The candidate should possess knowledge and experience overseeing large-scale data center projects in addition to an understanding of facility operations.
  • This candidate will be expected to project anticipated design schedules and report critical path areas of consideration.
  • Coordinates all page turns and design sessions with internal team as well as necessary external customers to ensure that the facility is built to plans and specifications.
  • Can oversee, and conduct, meetings with all regulating entities affecting the field of work including, but not limited, to federal, state, and local AHJs.
  • Manages outside contractors on all outsourced projects to ensure compliance, high level of execution, warranties, minimized waste and budgetary guidelines.
  • When the timeline is appropriate, the candidate will be responsible for interviewing and onboarding their team of subject matter experts as well as forecasting a quarterly departmental level budget.
  • Develops and ensures high level of service standards for the design team as well as exceptional inter-departmental collaboration, communication and support.
  • Provides leadership in the department to create a work environment that promotes teamwork, efficiency and productivity, recognition and respect, employee satisfaction, high caliber staffing, training, and an exemplary role model standard for the department per the T5 way.
  • Directs and manages all functions performed in the design department of T5CS.
  • Develops and carries out a thorough succession planning program for growth opportunities and support of the future design department.
  • Assist our business development teams, in conjunction with preconstruction, to provide the maximum technical value and overall project success by providing experience in the full lifecycle of data center industry design, project delivery, and operations.
  • Coordinate and manage the sales/proposal process for design services including preliminary layout and concept design with T5CS supporting departments.
  • Attend trade shows and other association meetings as well as continuing education to stay abreast of market conditions, competition, and establish relationships with existing clients and prospects.
  • Research and analyze key economic factors that may influence market activity within the data center market in conjunction with preconstruction.
  • Develop new and innovative solutions to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency for data centers.

Additional Information

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in one the following (accrediting body) disciplines: Architecture (NAAB), Engineering (ABET), Engineering Technology (ABET).
  • 10 years + of experience and knowledge of Architecture and/or Engineering Design programs and solutions specific to data centers.
  • Professional licensure as Architect or Professional Engineer (preferred).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND COMPETENCIES

  • Expert level knowledge of design and construction contracts including design/build (required).
  • Expert level knowledge of building code and the project development process as it relates to data center design and construction.
  • Advanced level knowledge of industry standard software platforms (ie MS Office Suite, BlueBeam, Autodesk (Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Civil 3D, etc. – or equivalents), and Procore.
  • Individual must be driven, hardworking and dedicated, required
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, required
  • An energetic self-starter with a “can do/whatever it takes” attitude who can perform under pressure, work successfully on tight deadlines and identify and resolve problems as they arise, required
  • Open to frequent travel
