Job Description

To support this mission, Syngenta's Operations & Trialing Team is seeking an Operations Specialist in Nampa, ID. This role will lead all activities from seed to seed to ensure the successful execution of vegetable research trials in open field and greenhouse. This role involves daily supervision of high-performing crews of third-party employees and hands-on operation of specialized farm equipment.
Accountabilities:
- Function as an integral member of the operations team supporting all activities from seed to seed from planting to harvest including but not limited to planning, seed request management, tissue sampling, pollination, crop management, seed processing and storage.
- Manage all farm activities, including but not limited to soil preparation, planting, spraying, cultivation, irrigation (furrow and drip), harvesting, and chemical inventory.
- Operate and maintain GPS-equipped tractors/planters and other seed research equipment with complex mechanical and electronic components.
- Conduct preventive maintenance and necessary repairs on field equipment (tractors, planters, sprayers, disks, cultivators, etc) to ensure reliable operation.
- Develop and implement an annual work plan, in consultation with various stakeholders, to ensure timely execution of farm activities and research trials.
- Coordinate water schedules with the irrigation district to ensure crops are irrigated properly.
- Use different phenotyping tools to secure trial data collection and data storage. Input and maintain data in database.
- Direct supervision of third-party teams ranging from 10 to 40 employees.
- Coordinate fleet vehicle maintenance, ensuring timely and proper service completion.
- Ensure effective communication with peers, breeding teams, and supervisor on work progress.
- Follow and apply all HSE (Health, Safety, & Environment) and Stewardship practices, as well as provide support to site management with the functional activities of a research facility.
- On-call for field and greenhouse emergencies or unscheduled work based on business needs or weather conditions (including weekends).
Qualifications
- Expert level experience in the operation, adjustment, maintenance and ability to do minor repairs on precision agriculture equipment is required.
- An expert level understanding of agriculture and agronomy practices is required.
- An expert-level understanding of sweet corn, green beans, peas, and onions production is desirable.
Additional Information
- All applicants must be eligible to work in the US without visa support.
- Seasonal travel to off-station trialing locations.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands
- Capable of working in high or low temperature conditions in the field.
- Potential allergens: pollen, fungal spores, and chemical pesticides in the greenhouse.
- Work is performed in the field, shop, and office.
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season.
