Job Description

Role purpose / Accountabilities

As a Synthetic Organic Chemist in Syngenta’s Product Safety group, you will provide technical expertise for invention and development of new synthetic routes for lead molecules and metabolites in pipeline to support the development of crop protection chemical products. You will have on-the-job learning opportunities to develop expertise in different areas of organic chemistry including photoredox-catalysis, electroorganic synthesis, and biotransformations.  This role offers excellent opportunities to develop and expand your technical depth, breath, and impact via academic research collaborations. 

You will:

  • Investigate and conduct research into new synthetic routes of complex molecules entering the development pipeline using state-of-the-art methodologies.
  • Collaborate closely with teams from discovery and process chemistry for route scoping and development.
  • Develop and optimize scalable synthetic routes that are amenable for the preparation of 14C-labeled standards of lead molecules and metabolites required to support global product registration.
  • Present research both internally and externally and publish work in peer reviewed journals.
  • Interact with cross-functional teams to offer technical solutions and consultation for elucidation of metabolic pathways of molecules in various living systems. 

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with 0-8 years of industrial (or academic) experience in synthetic organic chemistry with an emphasis on reaction methodology development/process research, physical organic chemistry, and/or total synthesis of complex natural products.
  • Sound experience in analysis of compounds using TLC and analytical instrumentations like GCMS and LCMS.
  • Excellent laboratory skills in purification of compounds using different chromatographic methods, recrystallization, and distillation.
  • Have a sound knowledge of mechanistic and physical organic chemistry principles.
  • Sound knowledge and experience in all aspects of laboratory safety and industrial hygiene 
  • Experience in carbon-14 synthesis preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proven ability to root-cause and resolve technically challenging problems.
  • Work independently to manage timelines and deliver results, while being an effective team contributor.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English).
  • Aptitude with electronic word processing, spreadsheet and presentation systems, as well as comfort in using electronic systems and databases
  • The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate that they are eligible to live and carry out the particular role in the USA.
  • Travel Requirements: some domestic and international travel required (≤ 10%).
