Job Description

Role purpose:

  • To support in planning, manage and support the delivery of Tropical segment breeding projects aimed at improving the performance of Syngenta’s germplasm and seed product.  
  • To effectively manage the delivery of these breeding projects results in the development of competitive inbreds to support superior and profitable hybrids as define in the target product profile.
  • Ensure that Syngenta Seeds Development Units exploits its R&D global breeding strength and global technology breadth to deliver a pipeline of new and innovative products for Syngenta in sup-port of our short and long term objectives. 
  • Translate the business strategy for corn into breeding and research priorities. 
  • Cultivate synergies with functions that help translate breeding advancements into successful commercial products (Product Positioning Scientist; Production &Supply; Commercial)


Accountabilities:

  • Support the Tropical corn breeding program in India and working very closely with relevant Germplasm teams across the globe, Discovery Breeding, AGS (Applied Genetics Scientist) Trait Development, Seed Operations, and Project Portfolio Planning teams to manage product development activities including:
  • Assist in designing, planning and implementing breeding projects that lead to the development of superior lines and hybrids that satisfies the Target product profile
  • Champion the use of the modern breeding methods along with Analytics and Data science to increase genetic gain
  • Plan breeding project crosses and associated testing including use of tester(s).
  • Regularly update and communicate early development hybrids, best line list, strengths/weaknesses of lines and other pipeline statistics such as number of hybrids in each stage, number of plots, etc., 
  • Manage the advancements and make selections of early development pipeline  together with other Breeders in the region.
  • Measure and monitor key performance indicator relative to pipeline performance and program efficiency.  Leverage performance metrics and benchmarking to work towards maximum efficiency of germplasm improvement (genetic gain).
  • Ensure appropriate technology integration in germplasm improvement projects and product development processes.
  • Plan, evaluate and implement where appropriate marker-assisted breeding (MAB), DH and other breeding tools.
  • Participate in global sharing of information on breeding protocol improvement.
  • Work with regional and country seed operation for effective and efficient work slate implementation.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities:
Critical Knowledge:

  • A thorough knowledge of breeding theory (genetics, statistics, genetic gain theory, and field plot technique), relevant germplasm and a very strong knowledge of GWS and marker applications to breeding.
  • Ph.D. or Masters in Plant Breeding and Genetics /or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated commercial breeding success.
  • Analytical and strategic thinking skills. 
  • Clear decision-making in the face of conflicting priorities
  • Strong influencing skills to lead and mobilise action without direct reporting lines
  • Good communication skills and ability to operate across cultures and geographies, and across businesses where there are few established processes to get things done.

Critical Skills:  

  • Excellent leadership skills with a proven track record of driving innovation
  • Excellent organization, communication and computer skills.    
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially those required to successfully function as part of a cross-functional team.  
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex instructions. 
  • Thorough understanding of R&D processes and sufficient knowledge to identify the critical issues and engage effectively with people.


Critical Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience of at least 6-8 years as a successful breeder is highly desirable
  • R&D teams and project leadership and getting things done without direct reporting lines
  • Experience of complex technical portfolio/project management within the company, with good cross functional collaboration capability
  • Experience in operating independently in a complex matrix environment
