Job Description

The Director, Systems Engineering will own the vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap for the implementation of robotics and automation technology. This new leadership role will be responsible for designing and staffing the systems engineering team from the ground up. Technical responsibility spans from the system and subsystem architecture of Symbotic’s family of autonomous robot vehicles to the full end-to-end warehouse automation system which includes material handling elements (conveyors, lifts, etc), control systems, mechanical structures, and integration with off-the-shelf and semi-custom robotic systems. This work will strike a balance between meeting customer needs and creating technical solutions that are scalable and sustainable for the business. The team is chartered with achieving class leading system performance and flexibility of solutions for various customers while simultaneously driving improved quality, reliability and cost. This will include translating user facing requirements into technical solutions, proposing system architectures, defining acceptance criteria and test methods, and providing cross-competency technical leadership during development.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to bring new products from concept through implementation, delivery, and support.
  • Own System, subsystem and product architecture for all physical components of the Symbotic offerings
  • Establish methods for identifying, measuring and improving the critical performance factors that contribute to customer-visible operational metrics
  • Champion a multi-disciplinary approach to system design and problem solving
  • Document and manage the evolution of physical and logical interfaces between subsystems to ensure system compatibility (forwards and backwards)
  • Define the Technical decision flow and collaborate with Program and Project Managers to incorporate into a cross-functional program plan that pursues parallel solution options until the last responsible moment
  • Facilitate data-driven design tradeoffs, within and between technical disciplines
  • Define technical mechanisms and organization processes to enable standard subsystems to be configured into a site-specific system
  • Establish the team as a trusted partner through a collaborative development approach and an emphasis on design and decision transparency
  • Lead and develop a culture of innovation and operational excellence with focus on customer needs, broad, divergent thinking for solutioning, and robust risk reduction practices.
  • Ensure thorough and compliant documentation practices
  • Prepare or assist leadership with preparation of capital requests necessary for system implementation. Plan and prepare annual budget.
  • Remain current on technical advancements in technology solutions that could impact the business. 
  • Attract, retain, and develop strong talent. Mentor, coach, develop team members. Develop and retain key technical and leadership skillsets.  Foster strong team performance to deliver on the roadmap and meet Customer / business requirements. 
  • This position will be in Wilmington, MA and may require up to 15% travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required (Robotics, Mechanical, Electronics/Electrical, Mechatronics or related engineering/technical field).
  • Master's Degree strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of working experience in a user/customer needs focused product development environment.
  • 10 years leadership experience working across multiple businesses or functions in an organization. 
  • 5 years project leadership and reporting experience.
  • Excellent knowledge and proficiency in Robotics, Embedded System or Automation Technology methods, techniques, and strategies. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of complex electro-mechanical applications including technologies such as robotics, vision, safety-critical systems, multi-axis sensors, localization methods, actuators, and control algorithms.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping and system simulation tools and techniques. 
  • Demonstrated successful product launches that translated to clear business growth and/or bottom-line results
  • Experience with and demonstrated skills in analyzing requirements, determining appropriate solutions, developing optimized implementation strategies, and deploying them.
  • Impactful leadership skills and ability to effectively communicate and to coach, mentor, and develop team members.
  • Strong analytical, creative problem solving, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
