About the Team

The Engineering and Strategic Asset Management team is part of the Facilities Management team, who are custodians of critical assets and infrastructure for SYD (responsible for the lifecycle management and day-to-day operations). The Facilities Management team is part of the Group Operations business unit which also include the Technology and Aviation Operation teams.

About the role

This is a newly created role to lead the Engineering and Strategic Asset Management function for the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at SYD. This role has end-to-end accountability to drive and deliver on strategic, operational and service outcomes. This includes maintaining, developing, and continuously improving the assets to ensure optimal performance.

You will lead a small and capable existing team (plus matrix project teams). This will involve delivering on operational priorities, at the same time as planning and managing strategic capital / asset projects. You will hold key relationships with internal and external stakeholders (regulators, ground handlers, contractors, consultants) to drive and deliver on the required business outcomes.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to

  • Lead the Engineering and Strategic Asset Management team to deliver asset performance, corporate plan targets, safety, passenger experience, and sustainability outcomes.
  • Deliver asset renewal projects, collaborating on business cases, securing approvals, and managing outcomes to meet milestones and targets.
  • Shape strategic priorities and budgets as part of the Baggage Leadership and Facilities Management Extended Leadership Teams.
  • Manage procurement strategies and maintenance contracts, ensuring compliance, cost-effectiveness, and safety in baggage operations.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement initiatives for the baggage area.
  • Mentor and develop the team to build alignment and high performance.
  • Oversee the use of CMMS to manage maintenance activities and records.
  • Ensure baggage assets and processes meet all regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Champion safety culture across the team and baggage operations.
  • Lead energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives for baggage projects and assets.

About you

With a Bachelor’s degree in engineering you bring technical expertise and proven experience in dynamic, customer-focused environments. You have successfully led teams in complex operational settings, delivering strategic, financial, and safety outcomes while navigating multifaceted challenges.

A proactive leader, ideally with experience in manufacturing or similar industries, you understand production lines and operational efficiency. You are a natural problem solver, skilled at identifying root causes and driving lasting improvements. Agile and adaptable, you balance calculated risks with piloting and refining solutions.

Collaboration is at your core, enabling you to work effectively with teams, suppliers, and stakeholders. As a leader, you inspire with clear direction, foster shared goals, and develop team capability to deliver results.

You drive continuous improvement, embedding sustainability, efficiency, and safety into every initiative. Your safety-first mindset ensures excellence in managing risk and maintaining high standards.
