Summary

Sundance is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Art Director to join our team in Salt Lake City, UT. Sundance is a leading omni-channel specialty retailer with headquarters located in Salt Lake City, UT. The Art Director is a proactive, multi-tasker with a “can-do” attitude. This role is responsible for concepting and art directing still-life photoshoots and leading a team of prop stylists and photographers on set. This includes shoes, apparel, accessories, jewelry, and home furnishings. Will also create designs as needed, including but not limited to inserts, bind-in cards and other collateral as needed. Will implement and manage design standards throughout the entire production process while ensuring all materials are delivered on time. Must be flexible, with the sense that changes are inevitable and must be addressed head-on. Must follow Sundance schedules, calendars and adhere to the yearly production schedule. 

Essential Functions

  • Concept and present photography direction for photoshoots to the CEO, VP of Creative, and your supervisor. Communicate the photography direction to your photography team.
  • Art Direct all studio photography for core catalog as well as Almanac and Inserts, including re-shoots. Other shoots may include Jewelry Catalog, special mailers and digital assets.
  • Attend all meetings related to Core Catalogs including but not limited to all core turnovers, design meetings, walk-throughs, pre-dtp’s, dtp’s and any other meeting required to keep up with current and new concepts. Other meetings may be required depending on new efforts as well as business critical additions. May be required to run certain meetings as needed.
  • Attend pre-press meetings in the Salt Lake office to take notes on any match print changes before catalogs go to press. Follow through on any changes to ensure that they have been input.
  • Direct the building of layouts from approved templates and libraries, including versions. Maintain the integrity of all designs when any and all changes are requested from the CEO, VP of Creative, or direct supervisor.
  • Design and maintain all front and back cover messaging, as well as headlines and any other inside messaging.
  • Work with Production Manager to ensure all typographic standards are adhered to, review all work for accuracy and standards, and ensure all deadline dates related to Core are met.
  • Collaborate with Photography Coordinator to ensure awareness of all studio schedules relating to Core.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional departments to ensure all pertinent information required to do job efficiently is received in a timely manner.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in fine arts, graphic design, or similar. Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
  • 5+ years of related experience in high-end catalog art direction
  • On set art direction experience, with the ability to direct up to two photography teams at a time.
  • A sophisticated taste level and knowledge of still life photography. Must have an awareness of photographers and prop stylists in the industry.
  • The ability to concept and create creative briefs and convey ideas clearly to the photography team, which includes prop direction and set direction.
  • Knowledge of typography, including but not limited to: kerning, tracking, spacing, as well as the ability to research new fonts for appropriate communications.
  • Extensive knowledge of Creative Suite (InDesign and Acrobat).
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, delegate, and shift gears when necessary
  • Planning and organizational skills to ensure projects are given the attention needed
  • Good understanding of color concepts
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
