Job Description

Reporting to the Human Resources Director, the Equity and Policy Specialist will be responsible for administering and overseeing Human Resources departmental policies and Equity related matters. Moreover, they will administer Equity training programs and develop inclusive initiatives to provide equitable opportunities for the society’s members. They will organize internal equity and policy related training as part of the on-boarding process for permanent staff, including executives, liaise with “equity services” at McGill and be responsible for overseeing policies, including the GSVP policy, and handling complaints.


RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Identify gaps in existing human resources and equity structures and frameworks within
the SSMU and contributing to long-term, sustainable improvements;
2. Hire, train and supervise Equity Commissioners;
3. Oversee the Equity Portfolio;
4. Act as a resource for executives, permanent staff and casual staff on equity and inclusivity
for the society’s activities;
5. Oversee communication and collaboration between equity-based groups on campus;
6. Oversee the Gendered and Sexual Violence Policy and Psycholigcal Harassment Policy,
including handling complaints;
7. Hire, train and supervise the Anti-Violence Coordinators;
8. Develop internal equity training as part of the on-boarding process for permanent staff,
including executives. This training will include GSVP, Psychological Harassment and other
related trainings;
9. Ensure compliance with legal regulation for employment equity and staff diversity;
10. Sit on the Equity Committee, Human Resources Committee;
11. Lead investigation processes in conjunction with the Human Resources Director and
Human Resources Manager for equity and human resources complaints;
12. Participate in conflict resolution and handle related issues;
13. Participate in the annual review of Human Resources policies, including GSVP, Equity, HR and Psychological Harassment Policy;
14. Any other tasks assigned by the Human Resources Director.

Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in political science, human resources, sociology, or other related field;
2. Diligence and impartiality in execution of duties;
3. Knowledge of and commitment to equity principles;
4. Highly organized and strong attention to detail;
5. Ability to make fair and equitable decisions under pressure;
6. Good conflict resolution skills;
7. Experience working in equity and developing programs and trainings;
8. Deep understanding of equity issues, barriers, and current movements;
9. Understanding of student government, an asset;
10. Strong communication skills both in English and French an asset.
