Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Barback’s responsibility is to assist day-to-day operations, this includes but not limited to assisting bartenders, kitchen staff, and supervisors with clearing tables, running food, maintaining cleanliness in our various spaces, receiving and stocking orders as they arrive, and maintaining constant stock in work areas. Other areas of focus include kitchen support and event support wherever necessary. Baristas also assist in the promotion of events held and/or hosted by the SSMU.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The function of the Barback role covers a wide variety of responsibilities in the daily operations of SSMU facilities, and may be modified from time to time by management. It is important to note that not all functions and duties are contained within this definition, and that the position itself should be ever-changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles, responsibilities, and essential job functions allocated to this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Maintain the cleanliness of the work environment: including all bar surfaces, tables, backbar area, event space in the SSMU building, stock area and food areas; taking out the garbage/recycling; sweeping and mopping;

  2. Support the Bartender in fulfilling orders if requested;

  3. Sanitizing and wiping down all equipment and workstations at the beginning, during and at the end of a shift;

  4. Set-up the bar area or event space at the beginning of every shift;

  5. Ensure that the bar or event area is equipped with the appropriate stock, supplies, and glassware for the duration of the shift as well as the following shift;

  6. Fill the bar stations throughout the night with beer, ice, alcohol, and supplies as needed, change kegs as needed;

  7. Inform the Bar Supervisor or Bar Manager of any stock shortages and report any broken or missing equipment;

  8. Represent the The Students’ Society brand with passion, confidence, and a positive attitude.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

To undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s) from time to time.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:

Barback receive general direction from the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s). A certain degree of initiative and self-direction is expected in day-to-day operations.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  1. Ability to work calmly and professionally in a high-pressure work environment from both an operational and political perspective;

  2. Experience: any previous restaurant or bar experience preferred;

  3. A fitness level that allows for heavy lifting, moving up and downstairs, and standing for long periods of time;

  4. Integrity, maturity, honesty, good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team are essential;

  5. Punctual, organized, responsible, and friendly;

  6. Ability to multitask, problem solve and take direction;

  7. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset;

  8. Familiarity with the McGill environment is an asset.

  9. Highly professional attitude and work ethic;

  10. Proven team player;

  11. Ability to work within the Vision, Values and environment of The Students’ Society;

  12. Commitment to adhere to COVID-19 regulations and ability to adapt to new protocols as those regulations change.

  • Paid position: $13.50
  • Contract dates: November 29th 2021 to May31st 2022
