Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Bartenders will be responsible for conducting day-to-day operations, including but not limited to making, pouring, and serving drinks; maintaining an efficient and organized bar and/or event space while providing exceptional customer service; assisting kitchen staff, barbacks, and supervisors with clearing tables, cooking and running food; maintaining cleanliness in our various spaces; stocking the bar; and creating an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Bartenders are responsible for a large amount of cash and inventory, and will be expected to maintain these within management policies and procedures (inventory counts, proper cash handling, balancing floats and receipts,

proper use of the POS, etc.). Other areas of focus include kitchen support and event support wherever necessary. Bartenders also assist in the promotion of events held and/or hosted by the SSMU.

As the main point of contact between Gerts Bar and its patrons Bartenders will work in collaboration with the rest of the team to maintain top standards of customer service and patron satisfaction.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The function of the Bartender role covers a wide variety of responsibilities in the daily operations of SSMU facilities, and may be modified from time to time by management. It is important to note that not all functions and duties are contained within this definition, and that the position itself should be ever-changing and adaptive. Nevertheless, specific roles, responsibilities, and essential job functions allocated to this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Act with integrity, professionalism and a positive attitude that promotes the Vision, Values and environment of The Students’ Society;

  2. Make, pour, and serve food and drinks to clients in a timely and professional manner while demonstrating enthusiastic and engaging customer service;

  3. Maintain the cleanliness of the work environment and front-of-house space, including all bar surfaces, tables, back bar area and stock areas; event space in the SSMU building, stock area and food areas;

  4. Ensure all glassware, plates/cutlery, garbage and cans are cleared from all areas and tables;

  5. Makes sure the chairs and floor area within Gerts or the Event space are organized, well kept and free of any fire/tripping hazards; taking out the garbage and recycling; sweeping and mopping;

  6. Ensure that the bar is equipped with the appropriate stock and supplies for the duration of the shift, as well as the following shift;

  7. Ensure that all cash, debit, and credit card transactions balance;

  8. Inform the Bar Manager, or Bar Supervisor(s) of any stock shortages and report any broken or missing equipment;

  9. Be knowledgeable of and prepared to educate customer about recipes, daily food and bar specials, as well as menu items;

  10. Inform student groups, clubs, faculties and other clients about Gerts booking policies, and direct them to the Events Department for further information and assistance;

  11. Serve SSMU functions in other SSMU venues by completing inventory, serving clientele and completing closing cash out;

  12. Follow SSMU and Quebec liquor regulations, respect and follow building and SSMU regulations and by-laws;

  13. Ensure managerial cleaning list is followed and completed before punching out;

  14. Assist student groups with the set-up of their events: including sound equipment, door, and coat check;

  15. Demonstrate constant initiative during shift and maintain a calm demeanour during periods of high volume or unusual events to keep store operating to standard;

  16. Represent the The Students’ Society brand with passion, confidence, and a positive attitude.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

To undertake other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s) from time to time.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:

Bartenders receive general direction from the Bar Manager and/or Supervisor(s). A certain degree of independence, initiative and self-direction is expected in day-to-day operations.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  1. Ability to work calmly and professionally in a high-pressure work environment from both an operational and political perspective;
  2. Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as a bartender, previous experience as a server or a barback may also be considered;
  3. A fitness level that allows for heavy lifting, moving up and downstairs, and standing for long periods of time;
  4. Experience handling cash and card transactions, experience with point-of-sale systems;
  5. Good knowledge of the McGill community and the Student’s Society, an asset;
  6. Service in Action certification (or any provincial equivalent), required;
  7. Hygiene and food safety certificate from MAPAQ, an asset;
  8. Workplace first aid certificate: CPR AED Level C, or any other first aid/CPR AED certificate, an asset;
  9. Friendly, outgoing, and dedicated to excellent customer service;
  10. Great interpersonal, communication and customer-service skills;
  11. Highly professional attitude and work ethic;
  12. Proven team player;
  13. Ability to work within the Vision, Values and environment of The Students’ Society;
  14. Commitment to adhere to COVID-19 regulations and ability to adapt to new protocols as those regulations change.

  • Paid position: $13.50
  • Contract dates: August 2nd 2021 to May31st 2022
