Job Description

Position Summary:

SSMU is looking for Thirteen dedicated, organized, and creative First Year Students to serve as Associate Senators. This is a brand new student-leadership development opportunity, and students filling these roles can expect to help shape the position as the year progresses. Associate Senators will work together with student Senators to advocate on behalf of fellow students for the implementation of projects that can benefit and improve the experience of many in our McGill community.  

Responsabilities:

  1. Conduct research relating to SSMU Mentor-Senator’s projects;

  2. Participate in at least two Student Senate Caucus meetings per month;

  3. Attend at least two SSMU Legislative Council meetings in the year;

  4. Attend at least six McGill Senate meetings over the course of the year;

  5. Join Mentor-Senator in committee meetings and in individual meetings with professors and administrators;

  6. Participate in three to four feedback meetings with SSMU Vice President (University Affairs) over the course of the year.  

Qualifications

  • Preference for First Year students (in either U0 or U1) but interested Second Year students (in either U1 or U2) are encouraged to apply as well;  

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Demonstrated passion for service;  

  • Comfort and experience working autonomously and in teams;  

  • Past experience in high school or CEGEP student union/student government, other extracurriculars that require report-writing and public speaking, or policy work is preferred but not required;

  • No prior knowledge of SSMU is required for this position, but applicants are expected to demonstrate an interest in gaining a deeper understanding of SSMU.
