Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Working closely with the Vice-President (External Affairs), the Community Affairs Commissioner will assist in the maintenant of good neighbourly relations and municipal advocacy to better the conditions of off-campus students.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Organize and promote events in Milton-Parc in collaboration with the Community Engagement Commissioner, such as the Holiday Party, Trash2Treasure, various Public Assemblies, and Affordable Student Housing Committee’s Annual General Meeting;

  2. Chair the Affordable Student Housing Committee and sit on the Community Engagement Committee;

  3. Regularly attend meetings of the Milton-Parc Citizens’ Committee as the SSMU representative;

  4. Collaborate with community organisations on advocacy work for the benefit of students, including affordable housing initiatives and city-wide sustainability policies.

  5. Promote more opportunities and channels for SSMU members to learn about community organizations and volunteerism in Milton-Parc through the Community Engagement Committee;

  6. Liaise with faculty associations and act as a resource for information about neighbourhood relations initiatives and events;

  7. Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Vice-President (External), including occasionally representing the SSMU at City Council.

SUPERVISION REQUIRED:

The Community Affairs Commissioner receives general direction from the Vice-President (External) and in his/her absence the General Manager.

The Community Affairs Commissioner is expected to check in regularly with the Vice-President (External) regarding the status of our relationship with the community and resource needs. 

Qualifications

  1. Knowledge or interest in political, social movement and governmental affairs;

  2. Knowledge of and experience working with advocacy-focused community organisations;

  3. Good communication skills both in English and French;

  4. Event-planning experience is an asset.

CONFIDENTIALITY:

It is understood and agreed that all matters to the SSMU and those clubs association or groups forming part of the SSMU are to be kept in the strictest of confidence, and nothing regarding the operations, policies and general activities of the SSMU or its constituent groups shall be divulged to any third party without the express consent of the General Manager and/or the Executive Committee of the SSMU.

  • Paid position: $15.65 per hour
  • Hours: On average 10 hours per week
  • Contract: May 15th, 2023, through May 31st, 2024
