Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The duties of the Speaker shall be to open and preside over Governance meetings, including the Legislative Council, Board of Directors (when applicable), and the General Assembly in a fair and impartial manner in both official languages, according to the SSMU Internal Regulations and Constitution.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Open and preside over meetings of the Legislative Council, General Assemblies, and
Board of Directors, when applicable, in a fair and impartial manner in both official
languages;
2. Serve as Chair for the Steering Committee;
3. Support the Parliamentarian with preparing all necessary documents for the Steering
Committee before Legislative Council meetings and General Assemblies;
4. Send reminders to Legislative Council and the SSMU Membership and campus media
for General Assemblies pertaining to meeting notices and deadlines;
5. Provide orientation and training on SSMU's governing documents and rules of
procedure to Councillors;
6. Collect all Councilors' information, to be submitted to the Governance Manager before
the beginning of the upcoming academic year;
7. During meetings of the Legislative Council, Board of Directors, and General
Assemblies, assist the Parliamentarian to control and edit documents if need be
(minutes and motions);
8. After meetings of the Legislative Council, Board of Directors, and General Assemblies,
finalize documents, in collaboration with the Parliamentarian;
9. Co-chair the Accountability Committee with the Parliamentarian;
10. Work with the Parliamentarian and Communications Department to ensure that the
Legislative Council and General Assembly meeting physical space or digital platform is
set up;
11. Compile and publicize the Voting Record of meetings of the Legislative Council;
12. Work in collaboration with the Parliamentarian and the Governance Manager to ensure
updated documents are accessible on Google Drive and on the website;

13. Liaise with Councillors, Executives, staff and Members for various inquiries;
14. Interpretation of the SSMU’s governing documents as required.

 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

To undertake other duties and responsibilities as described in the SSMU Constitution and
internal Regulations and as may be assigned by the Governance Manager and the President.

Qualifications

1. Meet the eligibility requirements of an SSMU Member, as defined in the SSMU
Constitution;
2. Diligence and impartiality in the execution of duties is required;
3. Strong communication skills in English and French is required;
4. Strong knowledge of parliamentary rules of procedure, specifically Robert's Rules of
Order and Code Véronneau required;
5. Strong knowledge of Zoom and G-Suite is required;
6. Strong time management and organization skills is essential;
7. Knowledge of the SSMU's Constitution, Internal Regulations, Policies & Plans is
essential;
8. Strong conflict resolution skills are desirable;
9. Competence working in a high-pressure work environment is desirable.

Additional Information

  • Paid position: $17.20 per hour
  • Hours: 75 hours total contract, on-call availability is a must
  • Duration: Mid-June, 2023 – May 31st, 2024
