Shop Superintendent
- Full-time
- Office Location: Waco
Company Description
Alamo Structural Steel, LLC is a leading structural steel fabricator in Texas, committed to integrity, quality, and excellence. We take pride in delivering high-quality fabricated steel on time while upholding the highest ethical standards.
Job Description
Alamo Structural Steel is looking for an experienced Shop Superintendent to help lead the next stage of growth at our AISC Certified structural steel fabrication facility in North Waco. Alamo has been fabricating structural steel in Waco since the early 1940s, and we continue to invest in our people, equipment, technology, and operating systems.
Reporting directly to the Production Manager, this is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role responsible for approximately eight supervisors and an overall shop workforce of 85+ employees and growing. We are looking for a leader who can develop people, create accountability, execute production plans, strengthen processes, and consistently deliver safe, high-quality, on-time, erectable steel.
What You’ll Own:
- Leadership of day-to-day fabrication operations across the shop and yard, with accountability for safety, quality, productivity, schedule execution, housekeeping, and workforce performance.
- Manpower management, including staffing plans, interviewing, hiring, employee performance, discipline, termination, attendance, retention, and overtime management.
- Development of approximately eight frontline supervisors into effective leaders who build capable, accountable teams.
- Implementation and execution of workforce development, training, cross-training, skill progression, and succession planning for critical fabrication positions.
- Execution of applicable procedures within Alamo's AISC Quality Management System and Quality Manual, working closely with Quality Control to maintain certification and disciplined shop processes.
- Production execution across material receiving and staging, CNC processing, cutting, fitting, welding, inspection, coating/finishing, staging, loading, shipping, and yard operations.
- Daily and weekly execution of production priorities established with the Production Manager, including identification and resolution of manpower, material, equipment, and workflow constraints.
- Productivity and cost performance, including labor efficiency, earned-versus-actual hours, throughput, overtime, rework, equipment utilization, and schedule attainment.
- Continuous improvement of workflow, shop layout, material handling, equipment utilization, production sequencing, and supervisor effectiveness.
Techology – Enabled Fabrication:
Alamo utilizes Tekla PowerFab as our production-control platform and Steel Coded in conjunction with PowerFab for inventory management, material tracking, digital cut sheet management, material traceability, and quality-control processes. The Shop Superintendent is expected to drive disciplined shop-floor use of these systems and use production data to improve visibility, accountability, and performance.
Why Alamo:
Alamo Structural Steel has called North Waco home since the early 1940s. Our business has grown through relationships, quality workmanship, dependable execution, and a simple philosophy that continues to guide how we operate: Do the Right Thing.
This role is an opportunity to have a meaningful impact on a well-established structural steel fabricator that is continuing to grow. The right Superintendent will help build a shop that is safer, more disciplined, more productive, and increasingly scalable—while developing the supervisors and skilled workforce who will carry Alamo forward.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Requirements:
The ideal candidate is an experienced structural steel fabrication leader who understands both the craft and the business of running a high-performing shop.
- 10+ years of structural steel or heavy fabrication experience preferred, with 5+ years in progressively responsible shop leadership.
- Proven experience leading multiple supervisors and a substantial hourly workforce in a production-driven environment.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial structural steel fabrication, including shop drawings, material flow, fitting, welding, CNC processing, quality requirements, and production sequencing.
- Experience working within an AISC Certified fabrication facility and familiarity with AISC Quality Management Systems; working knowledge of AWS D1.1 preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage manpower, hiring, employee performance, workforce development, production schedules, labor productivity, and changing priorities.
- Experience with Tekla PowerFab or similar structural steel production-control software preferred. Familiarity with Steel Coded or comparable digital inventory, cut sheet, material-tracking, and quality-control systems is a plus.
- Strong leadership, communication, organization, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Must be a visible, hands-on leader who can develop supervisors, hold people accountable, make difficult decisions, and earn the respect of the workforce.
- Ability to work within an active fabrication shop and yard environment and work additional hours as production requirements dictate.
- Most importantly, we're looking for a leader who understands that successful fabrication is built through people, discipline, accountability, and consistent execution - not daily firefighting.
How Success is Measured:
Safety • Schedule attainment • Labor productivity • Shop throughput • Quality and rework • AISC/QMS compliance • Overtime • Hiring and retention • Workforce development • Supervisor performance • Equipment utilization • Continuous improvement
