APAC Credit Risk Specialist

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The global Square Risk team works to protect Square, Square sellers, and enable safe growth across our ecosystem. We are looking for a Credit Risk Specialist to join Square's Risk team to help manage credit risk for sellers processing on Square. Working with a Credit Risk Analyst, you will understand credit and financial analysis, and have a desire to apply those skills in innovative ways to help Square increase annual processing volume while controlling loss related to chargebacks. You will report to the Lead, APAC Risk Operations and Policy (based in Melbourne). This role can be located anywhere on the East Coast of Australia, and can work from home or in our Melbourne office.

You will conduct reviews of our sellers, assessing credit risk associated with processing activity, and taking appropriate action following risk policies and adhering to internal and seller-facing service-level agreements. Curious to learn, you will gather insights, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to key initiatives to push our team forward. You will have a seller-first mentality, ensuring we live up to our purpose of Economic Empowerment, even if it isn't always the easiest course of action.

You will:

  • Perform reviews of high-risk seller accounts and take action in line with Square's risk policies
  • Analyse risks associated with different seller business models and card processing patterns
  • Collect and review appropriate documentation necessary to assess and mitigate risk
  • Document decisions and rationale following our underwriting guidelines
  • Communicate with sellers by phone and email, including investigative-level conversations
  • Work with internal partners including Fraud and Compliance, and multiple levels of management
  • Help identify process improvements and contribute to Credit Risk projects and initiatives

Qualifications

You have:

  • BA degree in Finance, Economics, or Accounting or related experience
  • Experience in credit, underwriting, finance, or related field
  • Experience with financial statement analysis
  • A team-oriented approach with a focus on accountability.
  • The desire to create, improve, and question.
  • Willingness to contribute new ideas, collaborate, and learn from and mentor others
  • Optional
    • US credit risk work experience
    • Understanding of the online payments landscape across all participants: issuer, merchant, acquirer and network
    • Previous experience in commercial banking or card processing
    • Work experience in commercial banking, consulting, FinTech, or financial services industry
