Software Engineer, Payment Balances

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Payment Balances team owns Payment Clearing and Balances at Square.  We clear all Square Payments after they have been assessed and scored by Risk, and we are the core Ledger for all Square merchants across the globe. We build and own the platform level building blocks that enable multiple Square products to record transactions, keep track of funds, and consume payment data for both external (Square merchants) and internal reporting.

As a software engineer on the Payment Balances team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the services and infrastructure that process billions of payments globally. You will be involved in the technical details of building highly available and reliable services, while also working with product teams to enable Square to rapidly build new capabilities for our merchants and buyers all over the world.

You will:

  • Build our Payments Platform in the cloud, used across the company and a necessary strategic asset of Block.
  • Design and implement high-volume, low-latency, distributed transaction processing systems, making thoughtful tradeoffs between consistency and availability when both are not possible.
  • Design and implement consistent, reasonable service APIs for Square’s products to build upon.
  • Build systems that manage customers’ sensitive data and hold Square to the highest standards for security and compliance.
  • Work cross-functionally with our product, business, and finance teams to develop Square's global banking strategy.
  • Design fault tolerant systems so the team can move fast without negatively impacting customers.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • At least 1-2 years of professional software development experience.
  • Innate curiosity and a desire to be responsible for all aspects of reliably recording billions of transactions in a highly focused and highly functional team.
  • Strong commitment to high code quality, automated testing, and engineering best practices.
  • A strong sense of customer empathy and a drive to ship software that improves their lives
  • The desire to work collaboratively, whether in person, over video, or asynchronously through online tools.

Preferred experience but not required:

  • Java
  • Kotlin
  • Terraform
  • Kubernetes
  • AWS (SQS, DynamoDB, Aurora)
  • MySQL, Guice, Guava, Protocol Buffers, jOOQ
