Job Description

Developer Experience is a growing internal team that serves developers working with Square hardware devices. We develop internal software, firmware tools, test software infrastructure, and developer infrastructure to serve our internal customer teams. Some of our customer teams are the Android OS, embedded software, factory, and testrack teams.

As a Software Engineer on Developer Experience (DX), you will split your time between multiple workstreams on our team, roughly 40% managed development environments, 20% internal web tools, and 40% supporting our hardware testing infrastructure customers. You will be reporting to the engineering manager for the team.

  • Building and maintaining our local and cloud developer environments
  • Building and maintaining software test platforms for hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Driving the development of and maintaining internal-facing web applications
  • Supporting stakeholder teams by providing technical support and triaging issues related to the tools DX owns
  • Working with other engineers, designers, and product managers to develop excellent product experiences.
  • Overseeing the entirety of your features; including component design, implementation, automated testing, and rollout.
  • Giving technical direction to our projects
  • Being a mentor for other engineers on the team
  • Holding yourself, and your teammates accountable to the standards of engineering that enables Square to safely move billions of dollars in payments and allow our customers to trust us with their sensitive data.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 6+ years of relevant software development (or additional academic) experience.
  • A familiarity with using Git for version control
  • The ability and passion to discover and drive projects that increase developer velocity
  • Experience in cloud technologies like Terraform, Docker, Packer, and AWS (especially EC2)
  • Experience with scripting languages like Python
  • The ability to collaborate within the team and with adjacent teams
  • A passion for building and shipping internal tools and products and working directly with internal customers to rapidly improve their development experience

  • Vagrant
  • Pytest plugin development
  • React
  • Web Assembly
  • AOSP (Android Open Source Project) development
  • A wide range of software development experience ranging from web applications, command line tooling, data visualization, automated testing, and continuous integration & continuous delivery.

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $202,500 - USD $247,500
Zone B: USD $192,400 - USD $235,200
Zone C: USD $182,300 - USD $222,800
Zone D: USD $172,200 - USD $210,400
