Job Description

The Senior Underwriter will have a dual role of underwriting and managing chargeback risk in our highest-profile sellers on Square and Afterpay, as well as executing on strategic initiatives to improve the onboarding, underwriting, and management of sales-onboarded merchant processing accounts. 

 

You will utilize strong processing risk knowledge and interpersonal skills to lead risk conversations with all levels of stakeholders and enterprise sellers. The candidate will possess strong technical skills to analyze financial statements, prepare credit memorandums to accurately assess a seller’s processing risk, and propose diverse risk management solutions to enable growth responsibly. You will collaborate with partner teams to recommend and negotiate key processing terms, as well as present Risk recommendations to senior management for approval. 

You will partner with the Sales and Account Management teams to help consistently manage risk while providing the best possible seller experience by leveraging your strong credit fundamentals with a passion for problem solving and interpersonal skills. 

Lastly, you will take every opportunity to improve our people and our operations by helping us create better solutions to assess risk and support our sellers.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth financial statement analysis and reviews for our most strategic and high-risk sellers, including preparing credit memorandums for approval by senior management.
  • Lead risk conversations with prospective and existing sellers to ensure that key risks are fully understood and mitigated. Manage difficult conversations with seller management teams. 
  • Present Credit Risk recommendations to cross-functional partners, including senior management. Provide context and rationale for recommendations to internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Develop partnerships with Sales and Account Management teams to ensure underwriting, onboarding, and account management processes are timely, seamless, and well-understood. 
  • Identify and execute on high-level initiatives aimed at improving our onboarding and risk management processes at scale.
  • Contribute to the continued development of credit policies and lead the testing of new risk management tools.

 

Qualifications

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in commercial banking, credit, or payment industries
  • Exceptional underwriting and financial statement analysis skills 
  • Comfort with diverse risk management tools and techniques
  • Excellent professional communications skills - able to easily communicate credit principles, build partnerships, and influence others
  • Strong critical thinking skills - ability to solve problems logically with imperfect information
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and able to self-manage to ensure highest-priority work is completed
  • Ability to prioritize based on qualitative and quantitative impact, and drive strategic initiatives from scoping to implementation with little to no oversight
  • Experience with negotiating legal documentation
  • BA/BS in a related field; MBA/Masters a plus

 

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $125,600 - USD $153,600
Zone B: USD $116,800 - USD $142,800
Zone C: USD $110,500 - USD $135,100
Zone D: USD $100,500 - USD $122,900
