Job Description

The Payments team is a core pillar of Square’s Commerce Platform, delivering a flexible platform which can be used by developers to extend the Square ecosystem. Square’s Payments team provides payment facilitation and money movement services for the Square ecosystem, enabling Square sellers to accept payments and engage in omnichannel commerce. The Payments team prioritizes systems which are reliable and high scale systems, cost efficient, and extensible - especially with an eye to support emerging markets and geographies.

As a Senior Engineering Manager - Payments Interfaces, you will be a key leader in our Payments organization, driving the execution of our products, technology, and culture of your teams. You will oversee a strategic organization of teams responsible for our Core Payments API, Refunds, Pricing and Cost Platform, and Machine Learning. Your teams will enable developers both inside and outside Block to build compelling solutions to drive business growth, while focusing on reliability, flexibility, and engineering excellence. Additionally, you’ll lead a team of Machine Learning Engineers working on new innovations at the intersection of Fintech and AI. You will also participate in our Payments core team, working closely with Product and Data Science leadership, and report to the Head of Payments.

As the needs of our sellers continue to grow, so do our products, platform, and technologies, and Payments is a crucial dependency at the center of these efforts. Ideal candidates have a proven track record of delivering highly technical, cross-functional, scalable products while building diverse, inclusive, high performing teams. 

You will:

  • Collaborate with product and data science leaders to build the product, architectural, and organizational vision and strategy.
  • Lead the team to execute and deliver what our sellers need in a timely manner, while pragmatically balancing across many axes, including the long-term sustainable health of the systems.
  • Manage multiple managers of independent engineering teams, structuring and designing the organization to achieve your vision.
  • Build an effective team by hiring holistically, coaching and developing your leadership team, and empowering the team to achieve their mission.
  • Work with your Engineering Managers to define KPIs for squads that align with goals for the broader organization and bring clarity and focus for the team.
  • Establish and uphold practices and processes that lead to exceptional products being delivered.

Qualifications

You have:

  • 7+ years of people management experience, with 4+ years managing managers
  • 12+ years of experience building and releasing software
  • Passion for Square's mission
  • Led, grown, and designed the structure for organizations of 50+ people
  • Strong people management skills, including full cycle performance management
  • Track record in leading complex projects across your own teams and adjacent teams to successful completion.
  • Collaborated with product managers and designers in defining product / technical strategy
  • Excel at written and verbal communication, including with executive leadership
  • Expertise in best practices for engineering delivery
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across discipline and organization boundaries
  • Managed teams responsible for machine learning deliverables
  • (Optional) Domain experience in Payments, Fintech, ML models

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $269,600 - USD $329,500
Zone B: USD $269,600 - USD $329,500
Zone C: USD $269,600 - USD $329,500
Zone D: USD $269,600 - USD $329,500
