Staff Organisational Engineer, EngOps

  • Full-time

Company Description

It all started with an idea at Block in 2013. Initially built to take the pain out of peer-to-peer payments, Cash App has gone from a simple product with a single purpose to a dynamic ecosystem, developing unique financial products, including Afterpay, to provide a better way to send, spend, invest, borrow and save to our 47 million monthly active customers. We want to redefine the world’s relationship with money to make it more relatable, instantly available, and universally accessible. This is our mission, and it’s why working at Cash App means so much more than a job.

Today, Cash App has thousands of employees working globally across office and remote locations, with a culture geared toward innovation, collaboration and impact. We’ve been a distributed team since day one, and many of our roles can be done remotely from the countries where Cash App operates. No matter the location, we tailor our experience to ensure our employees are creative, productive, and happy.

Job Description

EngOps

EngOps is a small team with a broad charter to make Cash App’s global, 1,000+ Engineering team better, cultivating an environment where our Engineers can do their best work.

This Role

The role reports to Cash’s EngOps Lead as part of a small but experienced team with direct exposure to Cash App’s most senior leaders. You'll apply your experience gained as a technical leader to deliver various organisational improvements, such as:

  • Working with cross-functional partners to drive process and program improvements, e.g. ensuring our promotion process rewards the right people
  • Establishing and improving the organisational structures and practices we use to get things done. For example cross-functional working groups and decision-making frameworks
  • Building communities that will improve communication, foster diversity and belonging, and build a sustainable culture of improvement by learning from each other
  • Qualitative and quantitative research of the challenges facing Cash Engineering to inform our organisational strategy. Analysing data, running and synthesising the outcomes from surveys, focus groups and retrospectives
  • Supporting senior engineering leaders to steer engineering, setting direction via planning and implementing processes that ensure we’re making progress
  • Incubating special projects in Cash Engineering then handing them over to new owners

Don’t worry if you can’t contribute to all of these responsibilities when you walk in the door, neither could we. We need someone who has done most and is excited about them all.

Some logistics:

  • Location - EngOps’ existing team members are based in Melbourne, Australia, typically working from home.
  • Travel - We encourage international travel, as you will be working with colleagues globally, particularly the US. While individual trips are typically optional, you should expect to travel around 2 - 3 times per year.
  • Flexibility in hours  - We’re flexible. We trust you to find working hours that best balance your work and home commitments. Some daily crossover with your colleagues in AEST and PT will be advantageous.

Full-time / part-time - We ideally want a team member to join us full-time. However, we are open to discussing a 4 day work week.

Qualifications

Experience

  • You have a demonstrable track record with many of the responsibilities above. We need an adaptable and broadly experienced Engineering Leader, comfortable analysing Cloud Spend in the morning and designing Engineering Career Ladders in the afternoon
  • You have built and led engaged and effective Engineering organisations. This is what gives EngOps credibility with Engineers and Eng Leadership and sets us apart from the People and Operational partners we collaborate closely with. It’s our superpower
  • You are comfortable in the ambiguity of the problem space (facilitating retros, running focus groups, analysing people metrics, diagnosing challenges impacting our effectiveness) and the solution space (driving change and getting stuff done)
  • You have a deep appreciation for the subject matter experts who share our mission of improving Cash App’s Engineering Organisation. For example: Recruitment, Inclusion & Diversity, Organisational Development, HR, Learning & Development and Internal Comms

Skills

  • Communication: listening and articulating clear messages to diverse groups of stakeholders (both verbal and written)
  • Organisational awareness:  reading the organisational currents and navigating competing incentives
  • Relationship building: building trusting relationships, particularly with cross-functional partners
  • Critical thinking: navigating ambiguity, challenging the status quo and making decisions
  • Influence: working with and through others
  • Outcome orientation: driving to gets things done that meet high inner standards
