Job Description

About machine learning

ML is essential to Block's daily operations and long term success. Its usage has grown dramatically over the past few years and is only accelerating. As more teams integrate ML capabilities, so has the need to avoid duplication by providing shared capabilities.

About the team

Machine Learning Foundations (MLF) builds scalable, composable components for ML use cases. We work closely with platform and product teams across the company to amplify their growth by solving complex problems that impact multiple business groups. We are not a traditional machine learning platform team; Block's ML community is too large and moves too quickly for MLF to stay ahead of such a diverse set of needs, so we target a narrower set of use cases that will have an outsized impact on our internal customers.

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join MLF's ML Integrations team. This team's focus is connecting Block's ecosystems with first and third party data, as well as maintaining Block's rules (decisioning) engines.

You will

  • Lead a team of engineers providing foundational ML capabilities supporting multiple stakeholders and dozens of teams while still participating in solution design, deploys, triaging, and code reviews
  • Grow the team by hiring qualified candidates, coaching and developing engineers, and employ your technical and managerial expertise to inspire the highest quality of work
  • Set the vision for your space, evangelize solutions, manage all expectations of stakeholders, and meet committed deliverables
  • Partner with strategic vendors, manage costs, and research industry trends and best practices
  • Maintain exceptional reliability standards while ensuring the team's oncall rotation is sustainable

Qualifications

You have

  • 8+ years of relevant software engineering experience
  • 2+ years experience directly managing engineers
  • A track record of healthy collaboration with product managers, engineers, and other engineering managers on developing roadmaps and executing against them
  • Experience successfully leading and working with remote teams
  • Strong technical judgment and meaningful experience handling complex technical concepts
