Software Engineering Manager, Retail Catalog

  • Full-time

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

From the cozy local wine store to the trendy sneaker pop-up, the Retail team at Square is finding new ways to equip retail sellers and their staff with the tools they need to succeed. Our team focuses on helping smaller retailers meet their customers wherever they are: be that in-store, online, or on social/messaging platforms. We’re addressing the desire for clean and minimalist store counters with intuitive yet sophisticated iOS, Android, and Web-based software that integrates seamlessly with our sleek hardware, all backed by highly reliable services.

As an Engineering Manager for the Retail Catalog team, you’ll lead a full-stack distributed team of engineers responsible for ensuring sellers are able to manage their catalogs on Square for Retail. Efficient catalog management is crucial for retailers as they typically have larger, more complex catalogs. This team builds workflows that allow retailers to seamlessly create and update their catalogs and works closely with ML engineers to introduce innovative features that make the user experience delightful. There are currently seven engineers on the team – three frontend, two mobile, and two server – with room to grow in the future.

All of our teams are full stack including mobile allowing us to design, build and ship features across our Point of Sale clients on iOS and Android, our seller facing tools on the web, and our backend platforms. You'll work cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data Science, and ML teams to build features that present elegant UI for complex problems, saving sellers time and reducing anxiety as they strive to succeed in today’s pandemic-accelerated shift to omnichannel selling.
