Job Description

As the Customer Onboarding Lead for TBD, reporting to TBD's Head of Compliance, you (and the team that you build) will design, implement and execute on an effective Customer Onboarding program to help grow the TBD business while protecting the broader financial ecosystem and the company. You will oversee the strategy, development and implementation of our BSA Compliance program including developing customer onboarding, sanctions screening and ongoing monitoring processes and controls for future TBD products and services.

Initially you will design a world class sanctions program for retail customers, to be built in-house by our dedicated engineering resources. You will also develop custom due diligence processes for various products and services within TBD, including providing subject matter expertise and input to the decentralized identity work being driven by our Open Source Engineering team. 

Compliance provides critical foundational support to the business to enable financial and digital innovation in a compliant way. This is an early Compliance leadership hire that we expect to develop our early compliance program strategies while heavily contributing to our team culture. You will be responsible for driving the overall customer management program, reporting directly to the Head of TBD Compliance. You will demonstrate excellent compliance regulatory comprehension and thrive in an unstructured, high performing, collaborative environment. 

This position can sit in any US Block office or be full-time remote from any US state.

You Will:

  • Develop a Customer Onboarding Program that is tailored to TBD’s current and future products, making sure we maintain the highest standards for regulatory requirements while prioritizing efficiency, automation and customer experience.

  • Hire and manage a team of sanctions and onboarding analysts responsible for implementing our sanctions, retail and institutional onboarding, and customer monitoring program, recognizing that we need to hire for compliance subject matter expertise and operational experience.

  • Develop and manage an operational capacity model for your organization to inform when we need to hire, outsource or increase automation to ensure our operating costs remain competitive.

  • Analyze trends and patterns in alerts, dispositions, together with other Compliance and TBD functions, including Product and Engineering, to develop risk effective mitigation and detection strategies.

  • Work closely with TBD and Compliance Engineering teams to design, build and test real-time sanctions controls for TBD’s global remittance product.

  • Engage with vendors and other Block experts to evaluate and assess third-party solutions to enhance our onboarding systems and capabilities. It is expected that you will manage and maintain these relationships as a Compliance Lead. 

  • Document and maintain all policies, procedures and processes within your remit to ensure compliance with applicable internal, legal and regulatory standards.

  • Contribute to our Compliance Culture by acting with integrity and demonstrating Block’s mission of Economic Empowerment to promote positive behaviors and maintain a solid understanding of risk and compliance across TBD.

Qualifications

You Have:

  • 10 + years of experience in Compliance and AML roles

  • Prior people management experience

  • A proven track record designing, implementing and scaling customer onboarding and sanctions programs at a regulated financial institution

  • BSA/AML Compliance expertise gained through the ability to interpret financial regulations and design and implement appropriate compliance controls

  • Experience with financial technology, blockchain technology, decentralized ecosystems, and regulated cryptocurrency products and services

  • Prior experience working for a regulated financial technology, blockchain or digital currency company

  • Strong relationship management experience

  • Prior experience working in a startup culture (effective execution in an informal corporate environment)

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $184,100 - USD $225,000
Zone B: USD $171,200 - USD $209,200
Zone C: USD $162,000 - USD $198,000
Zone D: USD $152,700 - USD $186,700

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Sales roles may be eligible to participate in a commission plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies.
