As a Software Engineer on Web Developer Experience, you would join a team that provides developer environment and CI tooling support to frontend developers at Block. Engineering teams across Block rely upon these offerings to rapidly develop and ship new features at scale. This team reports into the Developer Productivity organization which ensures software development at Block is not only fast and efficient, but delightful.

You will: 

• Build or integrate tools that will enable engineering teams to rapidly develop and ship new features in web applications with high confidence
• Use a data-driven approach to make the call on any new tooling that might need to be added, whether it’s off-the-shelf or built in-house
• Evangelize and drive adoption of software development best practices in code health, quality, and test stability through frameworks and information sharing, not rules and process
• Innovatively create and develop tooling to automate manual tasks in our web development process
• Build relationships with engineering teams to understand their needs and help improve their day-to-day workflows
• Translate functional and technical requirements into detailed architecture and design
• Collaborate with multiple stakeholders across the company including product, design, legal, support, and other engineering teams
• Provide mentorship and design reviews for engineering teams across Block working with our tools and frameworks
• Contribute to the direction of the team and selection of projects on our roadmap

Must haves: 

• 5+ years of front-end development experience and an excellent command of engineering fundamentals
• Ability to design and ship features independently.
• Demonstrated collaboration with co-workers on cross-functional teams and in other locations
• Desire to understand developer pain points, jobs-to-be-done, and strong sense of ownership
• Desire to facilitate tooling and best practices adoption through high-quality documentation, tutorials, and samples
• Passion for improving developer productivity and building scalable systems

Nice to haves:

• Natural curiosity to learn new technologies, solve interesting problems, and deliver impactful solutions
• Comfortable with ambiguity and context switching between different types of work (project planning and management, research, documentation writing, coding, presenting, etc.)
• Experience with or interest in DevEx (CI/CD/Docker/test frameworks/IDE extensions) or Cloud (AWS/Kubernetes/Terraform) technologies

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $202,500 - USD $247,500
Zone B: USD $192,400 - USD $235,200
Zone C: USD $182,300 - USD $222,800
Zone D: USD $172,200 - USD $210,400
