Product Manager, Web Payment Platform

  • Full-time
  • Alternate Location: San Francisco, United States

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

The Square Payments Platform is an open, global financial services platform for developers who serve sellers. It provides the components to manage identity, process payments across multiple channels, hold and transfer funds, and provide accounting, reconciliation, and reporting in a secure and compliant way.

We are looking for a product manager for our Payment Platform products — a cornerstone of the Square platform and the applications built on top of it. Our platform has handled more than $100Bn in payments volume across all Square applications. We do this by providing a general purpose platform of composable building blocks, allowing Square and 3rd-party developers to serve our sellers without them having to become payments experts themselves.

As the Web Payments Platform Product Manager, you will lead the direction of your products by setting the strategy, partnering with the engineering manager of your sprint team, and the product and engineering managers of dependent sprint teams to work towards your vision. You'll work with our payment method teams to launch new ways for buyers to pay. You'll expand your products reach and revenue by working with go-to-market teams to bring new application builders and sellers onto the platform. You'll work with security and industry experts to ensure our solutions comply with standards while also working to improve and modernize those standards. You are the voice of our developers and sellers in the room.

You Will:

  • Run your product like a business: manage the entire product life cycle and achieve the goals you set out for the product.
  • Understand your customer's needs and their jobs to be done. Shape the product roadmap of your team and partner teams, and define and improve metrics
  • Ensure your team understands and empathizes with their customers
  • Hypothesize, measure and learn. Test and use insights to inform decisions
  • Collaborate with engineers, product marketers, analysts, designers, and writers to build the product experience
  • Communicate the health of your business, project progress, and strategic vision
  • Represent the team with partners and senior company leaders

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of product management experience or equivalent
  • Empathy for our sellers and the developers who serve them, especially Web developers
  • You're excited by our purpose of economic employment and progress on behalf of our sellers and developers
  • You're excited to make results happen through convincing others to join you in work on a great idea with a great plan
  • Experience launching and scaling platform products with public APIs and SDKs
  • Desire to lead, the ability to set product strategy and work well with senior engineers and designers
  • You excel at talking with a customer or engaging, pitching an idea, or speaking to a large internal audience
  • Natural curiosity, obsession with the details, desire to build the right thing
  • Systems thinking mindset, technical background and advocate for great developer experiences
  • An analytical and metrics-informed work style that uses data to make informed decision
